Review: Unlikely Friendships
If the photo on the cover of Unlikely Friendships, by Jennifer Holland, makes you go “Aw,” then you’re going to want to get your hands on a copy of this book. Holland has collected forty seven stories of unusual animal friendships and shares them in her book. Each story is four or five pages long and is accompanied by the most heart-melting photographs you’ve ever seen.
Some of the relationships between the animals have been encouraged by humans, but many have been spontaneous and, I have to admit, those are my favorites. I don’t think there was a single story that didn’t make me smile and I just adored the photos. I wanted to hug all of the sweet animals in them. Some of my favorite stories were:
- The Salty Dog and the Dolphins – Joker the dog loves to frolic with dolphins
- The Elephant and the Stray Dog – I think most people are familiar with the story of Tarra the elephant and Bella the dog
- The Rat and the Cat – A woman rescues rats and a cat and the cat and one of the rats have become companions
To get an idea of what this book looks like, check out the trailer:
This book can be read all at once or in bits and pieces since each story is self contained. Everyone who loves animals will want to read Unlikely Friendships!
I would like to see the dog with the dolphins. I have seen a dog and an elephant. May be on Oprah’s story about Flora, the elephant??? I can’t wait to enjoy this book. I can just imagine how much you enjoyed it.
I actually purchased this one, but haven’t read it yet, Saving it for a gloomy day when I’m at a loss what to try:) Glad u loved it.
I am about to cry. I am such a sap for these things! MUST. HAVE.

Sounds like a book The Girl and I would enjoy reading together!
I gave this to my niece for Christmas and she loves it. I have to admit to reading through it before giving it to her! :–)
this sounds like such a sweet and heartwarming book.
You already know how much I loved this book! Thanks for including the trailer, I hadn’t seen it before today.
That looks so cute! The only one i’m not convinced of is the cat and bird. The cat looked a little shocked.
I love stories like this too, and whenever I come across one, I share it with all my family and friends. I have seen baby tigers being nursed by pigs, and dogs nursing kittens. It’s so amazing when different species of animals discover they have an affinity for each other, and it’s cool too! Great post today. I need this book, and Melissa would love it!
The cover did make me go awwww. This book sounds wonderful!

I love stories about bizarre animal match-ups and bondings so I’m thrilled that there’s now a book with stories about so many of these bonds! We can all learn from these pairings, too, I think!
Thank you so much for reviewing this book.
This book is wonderful. I wish some of my own pets would get along better. 🙂
Yes! I am checking this one out from my library…immediately! 😀
Oh … what a wonderful idea for a book! Are the hippo and the tortoise in there?

Beautiful stories and images. For Christmas I offered to my Mom a book with stories like those ones. On the cover was a big sleeping grey cat (a “chartreux”) with a pigeon, straight on it’s back : I love it and my mother too !
These kinds of stories always make me over emotional! Now I want to get my hands on it!
