Author event and giveaway: Cassandra Clare

December 18, 2011

When I saw Fiction Addiction would be hosting GoodReads author of the year, Cassandra Clare, I asked Carl if he’d join me for the event and, being the good sport he is, he readily agreed.  Clare is the author of The Mortal Instrument series and The Infernal Devices series.  We arrived at the event about thirty minutes early and the excitement in the air was palpable.   Carl and I are old enough to be the grandparents of most of those who were in attendance and we enjoyed their excitement and squeals.  Yes, there were plenty of squeals and the fact that young people were so excited for books and an author gives me hope for the future.

Clare answered questions from the audience and when she announced that the first few who asked questions would get a door prize, just about every hand in the room went up.  These kids asked some great questions, but I had trouble hearing and I wasn’t always sure what they were talking about so my notes are rather sketchy.  Some of the highlights were:

  • Clare is afraid of needles, so she doesn’t have any tattoos.
  • Holly Black and Clare are good friends and Black has helped Clare come up with some of her character’s names.
  • The Mortal Instruments series has been optioned by Sony Pictures and they hope to start shooting in the spring.  Clare will only have as much influence over the movie as they allow her to have.
  • Before writing The Infernal Devices series, she immersed herself in Victorian culture by reading books and listening to music.
  • She has always loved poetry and classic literature and keeps a file of quotes.
  • The Mortal Instrument series was originally supposed to be a trilogy with a graphic novel spin-off.  She decided to extend the series rather than write the graphic novels.
  • Clare outlines series, books, and chapters.  Notes and outlines help her keep her characters straight.

This event was Clare’s only event in South Carolina, so a special stamp was available when the books were signed.  (Apparently, there is an inside joke among Clare’s fans about SC.)  Quite a few people, including author Beth Revis, came from other states just to have their books stamped.  I got Clare to sign and stamp Clockwork Angel and Clockwork Prince for one lucky reader.  To enter to win  autographed copies of CLOCKWORK ANGEL and CLOCKWORK PRINCE, both by Cassandra Clare, simply fill out the entry form.  Contest is open worldwide – one entry per person, please.  I will use random.org to determine the winner. Contest ends at midnight EST Thursday, December 29, 2011.   Winner will be announced on Friday, December 30, 2011.  Comments are welcome (and appreciated) but will not get you an entry in the contest.

Interesting answers to the questions. I just recently read the first three Mortal Instruments books (in audio) and enjoyed them. Good luck to all of the potential winners!

My kids just LOVE these books, and I haven’t added this one to their collection as of yet. I would love the chance to win this one for them, so thanks for the incredible giveaway and for giving me the chance!

How nice of Carl to go with you! Jim went with me to an author reading once but an author he wasn’t familiar with and I don’t think he’ll be repeating that any time soon! LOL

While these books are probably not up my alley, anything that gets young people excited about reading is to be applauded, loudly in my humble opinion so kudos to Clare!

That sounds like such a fun event! I got see Cassie Clare at Smart Chicks Kick It last year at the Jackson, MS stop, and she was so nice. I can’t wait to read Clockwork Prince. Although I think I may need to refresh my memory regarding Clockwork Angel before I start CP.

Thanks for hosting this terrific double giveaway!

  21. December 18, 2011 5:44 pm

Seeing and hearing excited kids (from real youngsters to high school students) at a book event makes that excitement contagious, doesn’t it?! Nice that Carl was willing (happily so) to attend the event with you.

  22. December 18, 2011 9:49 pm

My daughter would LOVE to see Clare in person – we both enjoy her series.

  23. December 19, 2011 6:09 am

Sounds like you and Carl had a great time at this event.

  24. December 19, 2011 8:18 am

Excellent giveaway! *fingers crossed* I’ve only read the first book so far in each series, but I think I preferred Clockwork Angel–I loved the Victorian setting and the characters were great! I’m anxiously awaiting Beth Revis’s new one, too!

  25. December 19, 2011 11:32 am

Kathy, how exciting that you got to an attend a Cassandra Clare event! I’m not surprised she keeps a file of quotes – the ones that begin each chapter of “Clockwork Prince” are right on the money. Thanks for the giveaway!

  26. December 20, 2011 12:27 am

I’m glad to hear that I’m not alone in my fear of needles! That’s neat that she has a file of quotes. In my journal, I usually stick a quote in, in between entries of my own.

  27. December 20, 2011 12:32 am

Carl is a keeper! Jason has gone with me once or twice to a signing, but I try to be selective so I don’t scare him off!

  28. December 20, 2011 7:51 pm

I feel so out of touch with you lately! I had no idea you went to this event!

  29. December 29, 2011 8:23 am

Thanks for this giveaway. I have had my eyes on this series for a while so I’d love to read these books.

I love author events, especially if the author chats with her audience for a while.
