Author event and giveaway: Mary Alice Monroe

May 8, 2011

Mary Alice Monroe recently came to my area for a Book Your Lunch event and I was lucky enough to attend.  This was my second time meeting her and believe me when I tell you that she is just wonderful!  I felt like I was seeing an old friend.

Mary Alice’s latest book, The Butterfly’s Daughter, was published on May 3.  It took a while to write because of the research involved.  In doing the research for the book, Mary Alice traveled to Mexico to see a butterfly sanctuary and learned how to raise Monarch butterflies herself.

The Monarch butterfly is the only insect that migrates and the migration is unique to North America.  Monarchs live as far north as Canada during the summer but migrate to Mexico in the winter.  Since they have a fairly short life span, it’s the fourth generation that makes the return trip to a place they’ve never been.  Milkweed is the only host plant for these beautiful insects. Mary Alice is encouraging everyone to plant milkweed since 50 to 70% of Monarchs died in storms in 2009.

Mary Alice hopes that readers will take away two messages from The Butterfly’s Daughter: the power of transformation in yourself and everyone can help Monarch butterflies.  She said she loves Luz, the protagonist of the book because she traveled a difficult journey and still transformed.

My independent bookseller sold out of The Butterfly’s Daughter at the event I attended.  I was thrilled for the store, but disappointed that I didn’t get a copy.  (By the way, the bookstore owner said it was the most hardback books she’s ever sold at a lunch event!)  Since I couldn’t get a copy of the new book, and Mary Alice is working on the prequel to The Beach House, I got her to autograph a copy of it for one lucky reader.

To enter to win an autographed copy of THE BEACH HOUSE by Mary Alice Monroe, simply fill out this entry form.  Contest is open worldwide.  I will use to determine the winner. Contest ends at midnight EST Sunday, May 15, 2011.   The winner will be announced on Monday, May 16, 2011.  Comments are welcome (and appreciated) but will not get you an entry in the contest.

My grandmother always had milkweed but I am so allergic. Nonetheless, I’ve recommended the plant to my gardening club, w/ the hope that someone else will tend.

Best of luck w/ your books.

This Book Your Lunch gig is amazing. I can’t believe how many incredible authors you get in for that! I saw her latest on the shelves at our Barnes and Noble Book Fair and I ALMOST bought it (talked myself out of it because of my “problem” with the stacks at home). Thanks for the giveaway…I have to sign up.

I did not know that so many monarchs died in 2009. I was just commenting the other day on why we don’t see as many as we have in the past. Thanks for the giveaway.

Happy Mother’s Day, Kathy. Beach House is one of my all time favorites. We’ve been on vacation for over two weeks and spent Thurs-Sat in your area visiting friends. I waved to your bookstore. Ha ha

The Butterfly’s Daughter sounds like such an amazing book! All the reviews I have read have praised it . I can’t wait to read it myself!

Sorry you weren’t able to get a copy of the book at the event but I guess it’s great that it sold out! I think it sounds like a wonderful book and will look for it. I’ll look for milkweed next time I’m at the garden center – haven’t been there yet this year because we don’t plant until the end of May in my area.

    Happy Mother’s Day, Kathy 🙂

I just love butterflies and would love the chance to visit a sanctuary one day. A friend of mine was raising monarchs on hi porch, but due to a type of fungus on the milkweed, they all were hatched with deformities. It was sad to see, but I think he learned something for next time.

Sound like a great book. I love butterflies I try and plant things in my yard to attract them. Amazing about going to the butterfly sanctuary to learn to raise them, I have never heard of that before.

The 4th generation that goes back, now that is just fascinating

    Hi Kathy,

Thank you for making your competition a worldwide affair.

This is not an author that I have come across before, but that’s not really surprising, given the wealth of talent out there in the marketplace.

I have entered the competition for ‘The Beach House’, to hopefully start my journey with Mary, and I shall definitely be on the lookout for ‘The Butterfly’s Daughter’.

I admire authors who are prepared to research their subject, before putting pen to paper, and I just love the cover art on this one.

The lunch events at your local indie are so wonderful and this sounds like no exception. I didn’t know about the milkweed, but I can certainly add it to my wildflower garden.

Kathy, I also went to see her in Pawley’s Island, She was a wonderful. I will be writing on my blog my thoughts of her in the next few days. I thought she was awesome. I was able to get a copy. I have a extra copy( ARC), if you would like it. The book is awesome.

She is a wonderful writer. This is my first book I read from her, and it was absolutely wonderful, and a joy to meet.

  29. May 9, 2011 12:50 pm

I am so envious of all the authors you get to meet! I wish I could. I can’t wait to read her newest book.

I have heard good things about The Butterfly Daughter. And how fun that you got to meet the author and hit it off with her. Thanks for the giveaway too.

Sounds like it was a lovely event. I haven’t read any of her books but I think I should.

Fascinating the way tiny insects can migrate successfully. I planted milkweed last year so the butterflies would stop by.
