Saturday Snapshot

January 15, 2011

This is another photo we brought home after my dad passed away.  My mom said she was around 9 or 10 years old and  when she came home from school, her mother told her to change into those clothes and then the two of them, along with my mother’s pet goat, walked to the photography studio to have this portrait made.

Saturday Snapshot is hosted by Alyce of At Home With Books.  It’s easy to participate – just post a picture that was taken by you, a friend, or a family member and add your link on Alyce’s site.

What a fun shot! You look like your mom. And now we need to hear the story of the pet goat….

  2. January 15, 2011 12:07 pm

A pet goat? Now there must be a story behind that I have missed. What a beautiful photo of your mother and her goat. I adore looking at older photographs.

  3. January 15, 2011 12:15 pm

    Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh…I just love the photo.

  4. January 15, 2011 12:26 pm

I love that story – and that your mom had a pet goat 🙂

  5. January 15, 2011 12:40 pm

I love this picture! Your mom looks happy and just a bit nervous having her picture taken. It’s so cute how she’s holding the goat like she’s protecting him/her and the goat looks so comfortable sitting next to her. I love your mom’s dress, it’s so pretty and her mary jane shoes.

So is there a story about your mom’s pet goat?!
    Thanks for sharing this!

I wouldn’t have even noticed the pet goat had you not mentioned it. I can see the family resemblance between you and your mom.

Wonderful picture, Kathy! Alyce is right, there definitely is a resemblance between you and your mom.

I love old family photos. The goat is a wonderfully fun addition!

  9. January 15, 2011 12:58 pm

Thanks for sharing the story behind this photo. I love that your mom had a pet goat. 🙂

I love it! My dad had a whole menagerie of pets when he was a kid too. Raccoons, skunks, goats, turtles. That is how a kid should grow up! This picture is a classic…you should frame it and hang it.

  11. January 15, 2011 1:05 pm

    That is too darn cute!

  12. January 15, 2011 1:28 pm

This picture is a real treasure. Who else has a picture of their mom with a pet goat?

  13. January 15, 2011 1:35 pm

Another wonderful photo! The pet goat is precious. 🙂

  14. January 15, 2011 1:46 pm

I almost missed the goat! Usually the portrait studio pictures were so formal and serious. But this is nice, a slice of real life. And a lovely photo.

  15. January 15, 2011 1:47 pm

I love that they had to bring a pet goat to their photo shoot! Such a cute photo.

  16. January 15, 2011 2:07 pm

I hope you’re planning to tell the story of how and why your mom had a pet goat…I can completely understand…we had a squirrel for a little while 🙂 I just love old photos…especially the whole idea of looking at them from the perspective of a different generation and trying to fill in all the blanks 🙂

Is that a goat I see *looks closely* Strange and nice

I love this picture and, yes, like others can see the resemblance between you two. It’s very cute, but I don’t think I ever saw a girl with her goat in a professional photo! LOL

    Thanks for sharing it!

Ha! Old family pictures are so much fun.

The first thing I saw was the bangs. I love them. I don’t see them too much anymore. I also like the way the photographer arranged the photo with your mom on one side of the chair.

I love it! What a wonderful photo to pass down. I wonder what the photographer thought of the goat? The goat is so tiny, I didn’t realize it was a goat at first.

  25. January 15, 2011 5:37 pm

Such a beautiful photo! I love it!

  26. January 15, 2011 6:44 pm

Is that a kid (aka baby goat) next to your mom?? I did a double take and smiled when I saw your mom with the kid.

Thank you for sharing this one with us.

  27. January 15, 2011 6:47 pm

Oh how I always wanted to have a pet goat (a goat made it into The Bird Sisters because of it!). Beautiful shot.

  28. January 15, 2011 6:48 pm

That is so cool that your mom had a pet goat! Billy is most impressed.

  31. January 15, 2011 10:31 pm

What a terrific photo of your mom and her pet goat. Kathy, you look similar to your mom.

  32. January 15, 2011 10:50 pm

Aw, a pet goat, that’s great! One of my best friends has goats, and I just happened to be there the week the second generation was born, so we call them my Godkids. They remind you of funny looking puppies when they’re still young.
But, I digress. 😉 Great shot!

  33. January 16, 2011 10:43 am

I didn’t see the goat until I look very closely in the picture. What a lovely picture of your mother!

  34. January 16, 2011 11:12 am

I die over pictures like these. Love them. Sadly I don’t have any prints of my grandparents and their families but next time I head to Utah I think I’ll work on that. Such treasures. I didn’t notice the goat either–how funny!

  35. January 16, 2011 11:44 am

A pet goat? How cute! 😀
I love pictures like these; my mom has a few of her and of her family and they’re my favorites.

  36. January 16, 2011 12:38 pm

    That is simply fantastic!

  37. January 16, 2011 2:12 pm

A pet goat! My Dad had a pet duck that swam in his bathtub but no goats. Love that photo!

  38. January 16, 2011 5:12 pm

What a treasure of a photo, Kathy! Yes, there’s definitely a strong family line, isn’t there?!

  39. January 16, 2011 6:47 pm

Kathy, your mother and you share the same eyes and cheekbones. I can really see the family resemblance. And how cool is it that she had a pet goat? Awesome photo, thanks for sharing it with us.

Oh you were so cute!! You remind me of Scout with that haircut!

  47. January 20, 2011 1:23 pm

This is such a wonderful picture. I have one of my mom that is very similar to this. My mom’s hair is just about the same. I think that hair cut must have been the style back in the day.
