Kid Konnection: Man Gave Names to All the Animals

November 23, 2010

Artist Jim Arnosky has created a lovely picture book with the lyrics of  Bob Dylan’s song, Man Gave Names to All the Animals.  As you can tell by the dust jacket, Arnosky’s illustrations are gorgeous and include over 170 animals.  (The actual cover features the head of a tiger on the front and butterflies on the back.)  The animals included are listed in the back and I suspect young children will enjoy trying to identify the animals on the pages.  If you need help there’s an answer key on Arnosky’s web site.   Also included is a CD of Dylan singing his song and, with its catchy tune, I think children will enjoy singing along – I know I did!  This would make a great gift for any young animal lover.

You can watch the gorgeous book trailer on You Tube.

I’ve been hearing about this book. I can think of a few non-young (or young-at-heart) friends that would enjoy this as well!

This one looks like one my son will like (his first name’s Dylan, which will make it even more fun for him!). I find he selects books based on the art work, and something as gorgeous as this will be sure to have him sitting down paging through it for hours. And he’ll want to listen to the CD when he goes to bed 🙂

I grew up listening to Dylan, so I might buy this for myself (my daughter is in college and my nephew is in his twenties). If the cover is any indication, the illustrations promise to be wonderful. Thanks for this review!
