Review: Earth (The Audiobook)

November 2, 2010

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is at it again, this time taking on the Earth.  Presented as a guide for aliens who might discover our planet after we’re gone, Earth (The Audiobook) is laugh out loud funny.  Not only does this book present a brief history of the Earth, but a commentary on mankind as well.  As usual, Jon Stewart and company aren’t afraid to take on any subject – religion, sex, pop culture, etc.  Much of the book is politically incorrect  so it’s not for everyone – it is for the more mature (age wise) audience and those who aren’t easily offended.

I listened to the audio version of Earth and later looked through the print version.  The audio version features Sigourney Weaver and is read by Jon Stewart, Samantha Bee, Wyatt Cenac, Jason Jones and John Oliver and they do a great job.  I think their presentation made me laugh as much as the material did.  The print version has the added bonus of pictures, some of which are quite funny as well.  I enjoyed this book,  but didn’t love as much as I loved America (The Audiobook) – maybe because the concept felt new and fresh when I listened to that one.  Having said that, it was a fun way to pass three hours on my latest road trip.

Oh, this one does sound interesting. I think I would like to try it out.

Of course I will have to listen to this, whether it matches up with America or not. These laughing audios are good for me! I also just got Samantha Bee’s latest as well, and I’m currently listening to Sedaris “Dress Your Family in Courdoroy and Denim”.

I am scheduled to listen to this one next. I loved America so I’ll try to lower my expectations.

I had to go look through the book too, because I was so curious how some of the sound effects would be treated by the book version! And the readers – you’re right – they were great!

Ok, I said it before, elsewhere, but I think I am suffering from Jon Stewart overload.

I haven’t listened to either of these because of the visuals in the books. But I like the idea of listening to the audio and then checking the book out of the library so I can get both experiences.

I think I’m going to have to listen to this first then read it. I love The Daily Show correspondents who are reading it so I’m sure it will be fun. But I know what you mean about having to see the pictures, it was true for America.

I keep wondering what I’m missing that everyone else is seeing/hearing. I listened to the first hour of America and was bored. And I love The Daily Show. Maybe when it comes to comedy I just need the faster pace of the live show, I don’t know.

    I *heart* Jon Stewart.

I love John Stewart and loved America, so I think I would also appreciate this book. It sounds like although it was good, it wasn’t the better of the two for you. I am going to be looking forward to this one on audio, as I bet my husband would love it as well.

I’d have to find out more about Jon Stewart. The only name I recognized is Sigourney Weaver. I’m glad this one made you laugh!

Glad you liked it! I’m thinking of buying a copy for my dad for Xmas. I loved America, so if this is just as good, I’m going for it 🙂

Great review, Kathy! I need to commit to listening to an audio book soon! 🙂

Looks like I have a meeting coming up in Port St. Lucie, Florida, which is about 3 hours from me — I’m looking to really try an audio book, so I might start with America first, versus Earth! I don’t think I can listen to music for three loonnnnng hours by myself…!

I laughed just reading your review. Glad you enjoyed it.

This would be a great book for a long road trip!!!

An audio book that all the family would enjoy. Great tip for our next trip. Thank you.

I’m listening to it now and so far I agree with you. Politically incorrect, but very funny.

This sounds wonderful! I adore John Stewart and watch The Daily Show most nights. I’m sure the print version is very interesting but I think the audio version is probably more entertaining and funny! I’m definitely putting this on my list.

I love The Daily Show, and this sounds like a lot of fun 🙂

  21. November 2, 2010 7:37 pm

Can you believe that I never have watched Stewart’s show? This one would be entirely new for me, but it sounds like it might be funny.

This one is going in my “letter to Santa” but I’m pretty sure I want the print version instead of the audio … seems like there is a lot more content in the print version.

I haven’t watched Jon Stewart ever. This sounds like it might be funny.

I have America in print, but this is the second great review of the audio book for this one so I’m going to give it a try.

  26. November 4, 2010 4:44 pm

Sadly, this one didn’t work for me! I think the print edition would have been a better fit for me.

  27. November 5, 2010 9:50 pm

I think the audibook would be fun simply to hear the various people…I love John Oliver.

Jon Stewart is always a riot and smiled when I heard about the laugh out loud moments.

    Great review girl 🙂
