Review: 101 Things I Learned in Culinary School

101 Things I Learned in Culinary School by Louis Eguaras with Matthew Frederick is part of a series of 101 Things I Learned in School books and is exactly what it sounds like.  The book is small – approximately 7¼ x 8½ inches.  On the right hand side of each page spread is a tip or quote and on the left hand side is a simple black and white drawing.  The tips range from explaining cooking techniques to how to put out a grease fire to the difference between a vegetarian and a vegan.  My favorite tip and one that explains a lot when you eat at a buffet is:

When arranging a buffet, place bread, salads, and similar inexpensive items where diners will encounter them before the main entree and side dishes.  This not only matches the order in which most people eat, but discourages them from filling their plates with expensive foods that may end up being wasted.

I think beginning cooks and those interested in culinary school will get the most out of this book.  Here’s a sample page:

    Sounds interesting, but I’m not sure I’d get that much out of it. I like that it’s a little book though — perfect for a stocking stuffer!

    What a great idea for a series! I would love to check all of them out just to give me a little bit of education in areas that I normally would not investigate.

    I won a copy of this but haven’t received it yet. I think it sounds good and as Julie said – “perfect for a stocking stuffer”.

    It does sound interesting. I would considering pairing this with a general cookbook and giving them to a new cook.

      Very interesting about the buffet. It makes me think that next time I’m at one, I should skip to the middle!

    I have been seeing the 101 series all over goodreads last week and didn’t really pay much attention to them. Thanks for the review Kathy. I’ll look again for the other books in the series and try them.

    This looks like a really interesting little book, and I bet it is filled with a lot of stuff that would interest me. I had never heard of it before, but this whole series actually looks very interesting. Thanks for posting this Kathy, I will be keeping my eye out for some of these books!

    This sounds like a fun but informative book. And I must say, I fall for the old “fill up on cheap bread” every single time!
