A chat with Nicholas Sparks plus a big giveaway!

September 10, 2009

Nicholas Sparks at Open Book

Nicholas Sparks is the author of sixteen books, eight of which have been #1 NewYork Times bestsellers.  All of his books have been bestsellers and to date, four of them – Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember, The Notebook and Nights in Rodanthe – have been made into movies.  His latest novel, The Last Song, was released on September 8.

I was pretty excited when I saw that Nicholas Sparks was doing a signing at our local independent bookstore for The Last Song.  The last time he was here, the store was mobbed and I walked away without meeting him, so I was trying to figure out a strategy for this event.  Then I heard from the wonderful Miriam of Hachette Books and found out that she had arranged for me to meet and interview him!  I bet you could hear me screaming wherever you were.  The first thing I did was email Julie and Sheri and ask them to help me come up with questions, which they both kindly did.

Nicholas includes our local bookstore on every tour because he lived in our little suburb (actually in the neighborhood right across the street from ours) when The Notebook was published, and they were one of the first bookstores to host a book signing for him and he’s never forgotten that.

The signing was scheduled to start at 6:00 PM and my appointment with Nicholas was at 2:00 PM.  When I arrived at 1:30, the store was packed and he was already signing books.  I took the opportunity to talk to Duff, the bookstore owner, and watch Nicholas interact with his fans.  I asked Duff how many books he’d ordered for the event; he said 1500, and he was concerned that he might sell out.  Nicholas greeted each fan warmly,  gave them his undivided attention when it was their turn in line and willingly posed for picture after picture.

When I had the chance to sit down and talk to Nicholas for a few minutes, the first thing that struck me was how devoted he is to his family.  He usually eats breakfast and lunch with his wife and makes time for his five children every day.  He coached his oldest son’s high school track team and they won seven National Championships and set three US High School Records.  One of the first things he did when he sold The Notebook was buy his wife a new wedding ring.  He’s also remained close to his brother through the years.

Nicholas’s fans are also very important to him.  He said he never forgets who buys his books and recognizes many of the people who come to his signings.  Since he has so many devoted fans, I asked him if he’s recognized when he goes out in public and he chuckled and said no.

When he’s writing, Nicholas writes for four to six hours a day.  I was amazed to find out that he plays DVDs of old TV shows as background noise when he writes.  He told me that he has most of the details – characters, beginning and ending of the story and plot twists – in his head before he starts a book.  I asked him how he can remember all of that and he said the right ideas stick.  If he forgets them that means they weren’t right.  He gets ideas for his novels from events, stories, people and even things he hasn’t done in a while.  Nicholas feels that you have to have a great story to make a great novel.   Some of the characters in his book are based on real people.  He said he’ll retire when he runs out of stories to tell.

Some of Nicholas’s favorite authors are Frederick Busch, Ethan Canin, Michael Chabon, Tom Clancy, Pat Conroy, Nelson DeMille, John Grisham, Carl Hiaasen, John Irving, Joseph Kanon, Jonathan Kellerman, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Christopher Moore, Richard North Patterson, David Payne, J.K. Rowling, Scott Turow, and Tom Wolfe.  He is currently reading South of Broad by Pat Conroy and Christopher Rice’s new novel.

Nicholas strives to make each book better than the last and hopes to write something to be proud of.  Because of this, his most recent book is always his favorite.  Since The Last Song features music, I asked him what kind of music he likes to listen to, and he said he enjoys all kinds.  He wrote the screenplay for The Last Song before the novel, which was a different process for him, but it worked since he had the story mapped out in his head before he began.

I asked Nicholas how it feels to see his work portrayed on the big screen and he said that it feels wonderful and exciting.  He doesn’t nitpick the movie, but looks to see if the spirit of the characters and the story have been preserved, and so far, he’s been pleased with the results, even though he usually has little input.  The movie version of The Last Song is scheduled to be released on January 8, 2010.

The Last Song

Hachette Books sent me five copies of The Last Song to have autographed and give away to five lucky readers. To enter to win one of five autographed copies of The Last Song,  simply leave a comment on this post.  Contest is open worldwide.  I will use random.org to determine the winners.  Contest ends at midnight EST, Sunday, September 27, 2009.  Winner will be announced on Monday, September 28, 2009.

Pretty cool! I attended junior high school with Nick Sparks and his brother. And, in my early working life, I had a co-worker who was a good friend of his; and he brought me up to date to how they were doing (Nicholas Sparks was in college at that time). Fast forward many years and now he’s an accomplished author and family man. His autobiography (co-written with his brother Micah) “Three Weeks with My Brother” is good, too.

I have to say that Sparks seems to be one of the lucky ones regarding books into films. I’ve read about many authors who weren’t pleased with the results. I also love Walk to Remember and The Notebook (haven’t seen any others) and am very excited about The Last Song!

Lucky, lucky you! Nicholas Sparks came to Rainy Day books here in KC and I attended. It was so awesome. He really does come across as a great guy and a devoted family man. He discussed the school he helped start and I was in complete awe. Read about The Epiphany School on his site. You will want your children there!

He seems like someone you would want to be friends with. I’ve always wanted to meet him, but have never had the chance since I live in California. I bought The Notebook when it was first published and fell in love. Ever since, I’ve bought every book as soon as it comes out 🙂 Thanks for providing this opportunity!

I have never read any of his books, but I have seen the movies from the books and loved the movies. After reading your interview and how he was with his fans I really want to read some of his books. He seems to be so humble and have such a big heart. I would love to win The Last Song and have it be the first Nicholas Sparks book I read. If I love it though I am going to be a bit upset because I was a online bookseller up until a few months ago and I sold all the books of his I had before moving to my tiny apt (which is why I had to stop selling books)! Thanks for the awesome interview, sharing your experiences with him & the great giveaway!

Nicholas Sparks has become one of my favorite authors…I have seen him use so many emotions & situations that are “real” that sometimes I use his books as therapy to get through difficult situations. As a librarian I can only keep so many books in my home…but this would definitely be a keeper along with the others I already own!

  149. September 24, 2009 1:51 pm

The Last Song…another excellent story as Nicholas Sparks “sparks” emotions through his real characters who deal with tragic life events. Not only are they enjoyable to read but sometimes I use as therapy to help deal with the twists & turns that life has to offer. Would love to add this to my collection of Nicholas Sparks books that have become a part of my small library. As a librarian it’s hard to pick & choose keepers..but his books always are!
