Blog Improvement Project – Mid Year Review

July 9, 2009

blog-improvement-project

The Blog Improvement Project is hosted by Kim of Sophisticated Dorkiness and this month’s assignment is:

  • Find your original BIP goals post and take a look at what your goals were. Or, if you came to the BIP late or are just joining now, look at the Week #1 assignment to learn about setting goals.
  • Any other comments about the BIP?
  • Are there any blogging-related topics you feel like you know a lot about and would be willing to write a BIP guest task on?
  • What are the top three things you still would like to work on this year?
  • Which tasks have been the most helpful? Least helpful?
  • If appropriate, reset your goals.  Get rid of goals you’ve accomplished, and add new ones that make sense. Think about where you want to be at the end of the year.  Or, if you’re new, set some goals for the remainder of the year. Write a post with your new goals, and leave a link here in the comments or sign Mr. Linky. Stop back to this post and revisit some BIP blogs to check in on their goals too.

The last thing I’m asking is more of a favor than a requirement for this week’s task. If you have time, I’d love it if you could do me a favor and answer the following questions in your goal post, in the comments to this post, or in an e-mail to me [sophisticated.dorkiness{at}gmail.com]. I’m trying to figure out what to do for the rest of the BIP, and I hope re-reading the goal posts and looking at some of these questions will help me out.

  1. What BIP task have you liked most? Least (including ones you have skipped)?
  2. Which tasks have been the most helpful? Least helpful?
  3. What are the top three things you still would like to work on this year?
  4. Are there any blogging-related topics you feel like you know a lot about and would be willing to write a BIP guest task on?
  5. Any other comments about the BIP?

I will be the first to admit that I haven’t participated in this as much as I had hoped/planned to.   My original goals for the year were:

  • Publish interesting posts daily
  • Write better reviews that aren’t too lengthy
  • Learn how to use Stumble Upon and technorati to help the Book Blogging Community
  • Continue reading and commenting on other blogs
  • Encourage new bloggers
  • Limit memes – I currently participate in 2 and I think that’s enough
  • Learn a better way to list my blogroll – it currently takes up too much of my sidebar
  • Learn more html

I think I’ve done pretty well with some of my goals and not so well with others.  I’ve published a new post every day except one – some have been more interesting than others, but I’ve tried!  I’ve continued to read and comment on other blogs and have tried to be encouraging to new bloggers I’ve met.  I did start a new meme, but I dropped one as well, so I currently participate in two.  My blogroll is off of the sidebar and is on its own page now – this will be the only goal I will delete.

I still do not understand technorati or Stumble Upon even though I’ve spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out both of them.  I haven’t learned any new html.  I haven’t found any secret formula to improve my reviews, and as always have found some to be better than others.

  1. My favorite BIP post was the Blog Post Bingo.
  2. Brainstorming Ideas has probably been the most helpful, even though it wasn’t easy for me.  I actually started a new meme because of this one.
  3. I would still like to work on understanding Stumble Upon and technorati and improving my reviews without becoming too wordy.
  4. I wish there was a blog related topic I knew a lot about!  I just make things up as I go along.

You have done a great job with your goals, and I love the new meme. I have found the definitions to several words that I have seen around from reading yours and others Wondrous Wednesdays.

I think your blog is great the way it is 🙂

I’ve tried to understand Technorati and Stumble Upon but its just too much work. Hope you figure everything out.

I think you’ve done really well on your goals!! And I’m happy to be a beneficiary of those comments you leave. 🙂

I didn’t know you were participating in this project, Kathy. Your blog is already great! I think I’d like to learn more html too.

You are the queen of commenting, and I’m grateful to you for that! Your reviews are always good — I can tell whether a book would be good for me or not, and that is the ultimate goal of a book review.

If you figure out Technitorati or Stumble Upon, please let me know.

Your meme has taken off and that was clearly a great idea!

I think you’re doing a great job. I don’t understand technorati or Stumble Upon either, but then again, I haven’t spend too much time trying to. 🙂 Maintaining a blog can be a full-time job on its own, and I think you’ve accomplished a lot.

I’m bad at diversifying the types of posts I write. Though I didn’t officially join BIP, I’ll keep this exercise in mind.

I think Stumbleupon is lots of fun, but more to find completely random things than blogs. When it shows me a fellow blogger’s posts I do give it the thumbs up, though! It showed me one of yours just yesterday.

Congrats on what you’ve accomplished so far. It’s hard to do all the extra work AND post everyday. I wish I could say I had posted everyday, not even close lately.

StumbleUpon is great for sharing pages you like with friends on your StumbleUpon list. Stumbling great pages helps drive traffic to them.

As for Technorati, I am really confused myself about that one. I find it very confusing trying to figure out how to fave someone.

  10. July 9, 2009 10:17 am

I can’t figure out technorati either, and sort of stopped trying! I really wish I posted everyday, I’m not sure what I admire the most about your blog, that you post every day or that you actually have something interesting to say everyday! I fear a daily post on my blog would send people off snoozing for a nap, but you manage to keep it interesting every day!

  11. July 9, 2009 10:30 am

I do waaay too many memes! I admire your restraint.

    • July 9, 2009 10:35 am

You’ve done a great job! And as Beth Fish pointed out, there are quite a few of us in the dark about using technorati and stumble!

  12. July 9, 2009 10:48 am

I love your new meme! The brainstorming session didn’t work so well for me, but I found the blog post bingo to be very useful for introducing new post ideas to me. Are you going to try a bit of blog post bingo this time around?

  13. July 9, 2009 12:04 pm

I think you have done very very well! I’m been bad and haven’t done any of these in several months! I keep wanting to pick it back up..but then feel unmotivated. haha! So congrats to you for continuing with this one!

I think you’re doing a fantastic job, Kathy! I’m not doing the BIP, but I should, especially when it comes to commenting more and encouraging new bloggers. I have to stop lurking!

Your blog is great and always interesting!
I’ve spent a little time with technorati & Stumble, too, but don’t really understand why I need to use them. So I don’t.

Nice mid-year wrap up. It’s nice to see how well you’ve done on your goals. It looks like we are all in the dark on Technorati and Stumble. I gave up on Stumble. On Technorati it took them two weeks to “claim” my blog because of their technical problems. Of course now that my blog is “claimed” I have no idea what to do next. As far as html, all I can say is that I now know what it is. We Book Bloggers need our own Geek Squad.

You’ve done a great job working towards your goals. I bet as the year continues on you’ll finish them completely. But even if you don’t you can always strive to continue to work on it longer.

    Congrats, fabulous job 🙂

  18. July 9, 2009 7:11 pm

awesome! sorry I can’t come up with much more than that, but that’s pretty good, huh? 🙂
    You rock. Tiddlypom

Hey….I think your blog is awesome. I think you have done a great job with your goals. I give you a high 5!!!
    🙂

  20. July 9, 2009 8:23 pm

I think you’ve done pretty good with trying to keep up with this project. I started it but never kept it going!!

  21. July 9, 2009 8:26 pm

BTW…I think you’re a great cheerleader for the blogging community and I see where you’ve posted comments on so many blogs!! It’s such a great thing for someone who’s starting out to see a comment has been left!!

  22. July 9, 2009 10:29 pm

It’s good to set goals and to look back and reflect on them. You can pat yourself on the back!

  23. July 10, 2009 9:41 am

It sounds like you’ve done a great job on this project Kathy. Your blog is wonderful the way it is and your support and commenting to other bloggers is amazing!

  24. July 10, 2009 10:32 am

I think you’ve done well with your goals, and I love your reviews…and your blog…so keep up the good work.

I’m sure you are not the only one out of the loop on stumbleupon and technorati…I’m in the same camp.

  25. July 10, 2009 1:02 pm

Thanks for this post with all the hints and tips!

  26. July 10, 2009 9:03 pm

For “just making it up as you go along,” I think you’re doing pretty darn good. Your ability to post something almost every day amazes me … as does your seeming ability to comment on every blog I visit! : )

I don’t really understand Stumble Upon or Technocrati either … I got through fits of trying to use them and then just abandoning them.

And I think you are very welcoming to new bloggers — and that and your commenting are some of the best ways to help out the book blogging community — you help MAKE the community!

  27. July 11, 2009 8:55 am

I’m excited for you that you even attempted this project. I always say I should but……
