Interview with George Dawes Green plus giveaway

May 22, 2009

george-dawes-green

I’d like to thank George Dawes Green, the author of Ravens, for taking the time to answer a few questions for me.  Here’s what he had to say.

Can you tell us a little bit about your background? (Where you grew up, how you got into writing, education, etc.)

Like yours, Bermuda Onion, my family was always on the move. My father was a dreamy newspaperman drifting from job to job, and we went from Idaho to Canada to New Jersey and New York, and finally wound up on an island off the coast of Brunswick, Georgia, when I was twelve. Having inherited that dreaminess, I was a miserable student. Also I had a condition called hypernychthemeral syndrome, which gave me a 25 hour sleep cycle and threw my school years into a deep twilight. The last grade I really passed was the third (though in NY I did well on the year-end Regents tests, so I kept passing till I landed in Georgia) …

Can you tell us a little about your writing routine?

I write all the time when I’m really rolling … but it takes me a while to get rolling. Years sometimes. Decades.

Since both THE CAVEMAN’S VALENTINE and THE JUROR were made into movies, I’m wondering if there are any movie plans for RAVENS.  If so, who would you like to see playing Shaw and Romeo?

There’s negotiations going on now. But the characters are so complex, and Romeo so sad — I’m not sure a movie will work unless it were done brilliantly. I’m going to guard this one closely. I’d like Paul Newman for Shaw, if he makes himself available again.

I love books, like RAVENS, where the setting is familiar to me.  The setting almost becomes another character for me.  Do you spend a lot of time working on the setting of your books?

I did this time. I drove around and around Brunswick with various guides, and drank in its spirit. Really the ‘Wick is my home — neglected   for too long. I’m in love with it again.

What have you been doing in the 14 years since the publication of your last book?

The time seems to get away. I remember one afternoon clearly, riding bikes with Skye Sullivan on Sapelo Island, trying to chase her down. Hot soupy sand under the wheels, deerflies, dream-slowness, an alligator sunning itself beside the road.

Some of the other days are less vivid.

Who are your favorite authors?

Cheever, Bellow, Calvino, Thomas DeQuincey — that’s a start. Of contemporary Americans, Mary Gaitskill and Annie Dillard leap to mind. I think the world of Dillard’s latest, The Maytrees.

I’d love to know more about The Moth.

It’s a club that I started 11 years ago, a celebration of the art of the raconteur. On a good night, it’s the most riveting entertainment to be  found anywhere. There’s a new Wall Street Journal article that explains it pretty well

Also, a story I recently told has been posted on The Moth podcast.  It’ll give some of the flavor, and tell you something about my relationship with Brunswick as well.

Thanks to the wonderful folks at Hachette Books, I have one set of all three of George Dawes Green’s books to giveaway.  One lucky  winner will receive The Caveman’s Valentine, The Juror and Ravens.   To enter this giveaway,  simply leave a comment on this post.  Contest is open to US and Canadian residents only (no PO Boxes, please).  I will use random.org to determine the winner.  Contest ends at midnight EST, Wednesday, June 3, 2009.  Winner will be announced on Thursday, June 4, 2009.

    hmmmm

    I had to Google “hypernychthemeral”:
“A rare chronic form of sleep disorder involving a disturbance of the circadian rhythm. Patients have a consistent one or two hour delay in the time the go to sleep as well as the time they wake up so their sleep pattern doesn’t fit into the 24 hour cycle. Thus, the sleep cycle changes every day which can be very disruptive. It has most often been reported in blind people.”

Isn’t the human body amazing? I saw the other day where someone had asked for the name of a book that lists every human condition/disease. Impossible. Too many.

I haven’t read any of his books. I’d love a chance to win. Please count me in. Thank you!
