Review: And the Mountains Echoed

May 14, 2013

And the Mountains Echoed

Ever since the publication of The Kite Runner ten years ago, I’ve heard a lot about Khaled Hosseini‘s writing, but somehow have never made the time or the effort to read any of his work and I’m not really sure why.  When I was recently offered the opportunity to read his latest book, And the Mountains Echoed, I didn’t hesitate to grab it, and I’m so glad I did.  I will definitely be making the time to read Hosseini’s other work after reading this masterpiece.

I’m not going to summarize this book because I went into it knowing nothing and I really think that’s the best way to experience it.  I would hate to spoil anything for anyone who has yet to read this marvelous book.  Suffice it to say it’s a story of family, love, faith, honor, and sacrifice.  It shows how one decision can alter the lives of so many and how guilt can surround you.  Hosseini’s writing is gorgeous and immerses the reader in the story – once you pick And the Mountains Echoed up, you won’t want to put it down.  I loved this book so much and have been urging everyone I know to read it.  It will definitely be one of my favorites of the year – it’s a must read that you’ll want to pick up as soon as you can!

I remembered you telling me this, so I quickly loaded the audio on my iPod (that and about a dozen others…ack!). I did read his other books, and he does write a compelling story. I DO sorta feel like he tries to manipulate my emotions. He throws in a lot of melodramatics.

    Lovely spoiler free review! :-)

Oh, how exciting that this is your first by Hossieni. I have it, and I’m savoring every page!

Can’t wait to read it (loved his first two books).

  6. May 14, 2013 7:17 am

Can’t wait to get my hands on a copy.

I can’t wait to get to this one also! Definitely try The Kite Runner. I got one for my sister and she still hasn’t forgiven me for the emotional trauma of it! LOL

I read his 1st 2 books. And what surprised me most is that his 2nd book, A Thousand Splendid Suns, was almost as good as The Kite Runner. I worried that anything he wrote after the blockbuster 1st one would not measure up. But it did. I’m not the least bit surprised that his 3rd one is also excellent. He simply won’t rest on his laurels. Good for him.

I can’t WAIT to read this one. His first two books are truly amazing. I hope you get to enjoy them soon!

I had really good luck with his first book and then never could really get into the second one. Maybe I’ll give this one a try to see how I feel about it. :)

I have read so many great things about this author and this book…time to make time for it!

After reading his first book, I hesitated to read the second one since I was afraid of the sophomore slump. Needn’t have worried. Now his third is definitely on my list. I know now to expect something wonderful with each book he writes.

I LOVE to read books to which people have had the reaction you did with this one. You know – when you urge everybody you meet to read it. Sadly, most do not. But I will!! :-)

I really must try his books

Kathy, I saw the movie The Kite Runner, but have not read the book. This new novel sounds wonderful, and I’ll definitely keep it in mind.

I have read both of Khaled Hosseini‘s other books and enjoyed them immensely. Some people thought that A Thousand Splendid Sons was not as good as the Kite Runner and I disagree. I had been wishing for an advance copy, but didn’t get lucky so far. I will not regret purchasing this book, I am sure it was great!! Besides I need a copy to go with his other 2 books on the shelf. LOL.

  22. May 14, 2013 10:12 pm

Like you, I haven’t read Hosseini‘s first two books. I have a copy of the audio for this one which I will definitely make time to listen to.

I’ve had The Kite Runner since it came out but still haven’t read it. Glad you liked this books so much, makes me want to read it as well as this one and A Thousand Splendid Suns..

Can’t say I like his books, but as everyone else here has said, they are compelling, and I’m glad the newest one doesn’t disappoint.

I’m really excited to read this! Loved the Kiter Runner.

  30. May 16, 2013 9:26 pm

High praise indeed if you already know it will be a favorite.

  31. May 16, 2013 9:33 pm

…it’s a story of family, love, faith, honor, and sacrifice. I think I said pretty much the same thing in my review for A Thousand Splendid Suns, which I loved (even more so than The Kite Runner). I’m anxious to get my hands on this. I guess the big decision is do I listen to it or read it?!

  36. May 25, 2013 8:23 am

I don’t know anything about the plot of this book, but I’m sure it’s going to be a winner like his other two. My copy will be here early next week! Glad you loved it.

I’m very excited about this book. I loved The Kite Runner. It was the first book I read for college and Hosseini was the speaker at my commencement ceremony so I know what an eloquent (and inspiring) speaker and writer he is. I’m glad that you enjoyed this one. I hope that you enjoy his other books just as much.
