A musical interlude: What I’m listening to

Left to our own devices, Carl and I would listen to the music of our youth, what’s commonly referred to as “Classic Rock” these days, so it was a given that Vance would be in charge of the music when he and Carl opened their store last year.  Vance created a Pandora station for the store and people comment on the music all the time.  Someone even asked Carl and me if she could buy the playlist – we just looked at each other, because we had no idea what she was talking about.  Here’s some of the music it’s introduced me to:

Mumford and Sons is a group out of the UK.  The lead singer is Marcus Mumford – I’m not sure where the sons come in.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The Black Keys – can I just say I squealed when I discovered they’re coming here and I bought tickets the day they went on sale?!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A lot of people are familiar with The Heavy’s song How Do You Like Me Now? but they’re so much more than that.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I am in awe of the voice of 24 year old Brittany Howard, the lead singer of Alabama Shakes.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hearing Home by Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros always makes me feel good.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

What are you listening to these days?

    Fun post! I enjoy so many of these groups too!

    Good for Vance! There are some great new bands out there, even though I tend to listen to my good old favorites. I couldn’t be prouder that my son love the classic rock as well. (Hey we are going to see Rush at the end of April!) I personally think that music selections at retail stores is very very important. Love Mumford.

    Music is a big part of our lives, but our tastes are most definitely more influenced by our kids as they become older and more opinionated! Luckily our boys have decent taste in music so far, save for the odd “Thrift Shop” fad. Ugh. I have a special fondness for rock covers of pop songs (Red’s covers of Duran Duran, Feel No Fear’s cover of Rhianna). Right now, our family is on an upswing of hard rock/classic rock…anything with real instruments. (It’s my protests against over-produced lip-synching teenagers).

    Quite an interesting collection! I wasn’t familiar with any of them of course!

    I applaud your open-mindedness. I, being a product of the ’60′s, listen to only ’60′s (classic rock, as you say), and Broadway musicals. I have about a 100 CD’s from Broadway shows that I keep rotating. I can’t get enough of those. My exposure to other music comes from singing competitions (kind of gave up on Idol but love The Voice).

    What a fun post Kathy! I am a new fan of Mumford & Sons and was not as familiar with some of the other music. I like classic rock as well and recently have been listening to the Beatles and Paul McCartney again…classics. That’s great that Vance has already had requests for a music track…he should see if he could sell one! Hope all is going well with the store!!

    The music I own is mostly old, I mean, “classic” stuff from the 60s, 70s and 80s. I like some of the new stuff but I never know who the artists are. When I’m in the car by myself I’m usually listening to an audiobook.

    I’m not a huge fan of Mumford & Sons, though can’t explain why. I’ve never heard these others before, and I really liked a few. I find myselfs listening to music from the 30s through the 50s lately. I guess I like the voices and the music back then a bit better than most stuff that comes out now.

    Terrific post, Kathy. I am totally loving HOLD ON by Alabama Shakes! I never heard them before you posted the video. Wow … just wow!

    I don’t listen to music very often – my husband’s the big music lover in the family, with a hugely eclectic taste. I’ve heard of Mumford & Sons, though, and keep meaning to check them out (I couldn’t play the video for some reason because of geographical restrictions but I’m sure there will be something on Youtube!). Great post!

    I really haven’t listened to any of these so I guess it tells that I barely listen to music. :) But I love to take up anyone’s offer to listen to any song – so I’m playing all of them that you have linked here.

    Love these…especially Mumford and Sons…

    I’m always looking for new music–I know of most of these artists thanks to NPR (it’s not just for classical any more!). But I did NOT know that Carl and Vance had a beer store! I’ll have to send my son Chris there if he’s ever down near y’all…he’s quite the beer snob :-) .

    You have gotten me totally ADDICTED to The Heavy. I have been listening to them pretty much all the time since you mentioned them to me! I have them on Pandora, I have all their songs in my Spotify playlist. I am obsessed! Thank you again for turning me on to them!

    Have you heard of Crash Kings? I really like Mountain Man and You Got Me. And Bottom of the River by Delta Rae is awesome. They are from NC!

    I love that your son has brought you up to date with music. My kids have been doing that for me for the past couple of years and it’s really fun to see where our taste overlaps. I hadn’t heard of The Heavy before–listening right now. Thanks for the music!

  16. March 10, 2013 9:29 pm

    I know and like the first two groups, but the rest are new to me. I love to discover new music–so thank you!

      Can I take back my last comment? I know the last two songs, also, but I didn’t know the names of the bands. :)

  17. March 10, 2013 11:16 pm

    I am so not a music girl so I am always behind the times!

  18. March 11, 2013 1:18 am

    How fun that you’re going to see the Black Keys! Love your musical taste. My daughter got me into Mumford and Sons too :)

  19. March 11, 2013 1:44 pm

    I haven’t heard of The Heavy but I LOOOOOOOOOVE all of these other songs. There’s an adorable version of Home on YouTube with a dad and his baby girl singing that just melts my heart. Hope you have a blast at the Black Keys!

  20. March 11, 2013 6:36 pm

    Going to check out all of these..but I’m aware of and really like Mumford and Sons. I think it’s cool that people love the music in the store!!

  21. March 11, 2013 8:44 pm

    That’s a good mix! I like The Black Keys a lot, and now I want to try some of these other bands!

    I like all of these! What’s the name of their Pandora station? I’d love to subscribe to it. I count on my nieces and nephew to keep in tune with new music.

  23. March 14, 2013 12:48 am

    I love, Love, LOVE music. All kinds. I too, would love to buy the soundtrack from you!! It’s great music. You were smart to put Vance in charge.
    I’m going to go listen to your videos again.

  24. March 14, 2013 12:50 am

    There is an ‘Indy” theme going on in the music. I love it.

  25. March 14, 2013 12:56 am

    “Indie” (not Indy)
