Kid Konnection: Drama
Callie loves the theater but she’s not much of a performer so she works behind the scenes with the stage crew for her middle school’s play. As a matter of fact, she’s in charge of set design this year. She’s got big ideas and a little budget and puts a lot of pressure on herself to make the set fabulous. But tickets sales are down and the cast and crew are called upon to promote the play. Callie has to deal with all of that, plus school, boys, and the drama that goes along with middle school.
Drama is the perfect title for the new graphic novel by Raina Telgemeier since there was plenty of drama on and off the stage. The story line isn’t all that unique for a middle grade book but the drama club setting adds a fun new twist.
I thought Callie was a terrific character! She loves theater and works hard to the make the set of the school’s production the best it can be. I found it rather refreshing that she’s still trying to figure things out when it comes to boys. She’s loyal to her friends and never mean even when things don’t go her way.
The artwork in this graphic novel is fantastic! The drawings inside are every bit as good as the cover and the story is easy to follow. I thought Drama was wonderfully creative and recommend it. I think middle grade girls, especially those involved in drama, will love this book!
