At the movies: Moonrise Kingdom

August 9, 2012

Two twelve year olds fall in love when they have a chance encounter at a play she performs in.  They write letters and make plans to run away together.  Sam escapes from Khaki Scout camp and Suzy meets him in the designated spot, carrying her suitcase.  Once they’re reported missing, the townspeople, the police, and the Khaki Scouts begin hunting for them.   Sam and Suzy get help from some unlikely people.

My friend and I went to see Moonrise Kingdom because it’s gotten great reviews and we know Wes Anderson has quite a following.  Unfortunately, it didn’t appeal to either of us.  I’m not sure if we’re not sophisticated enough or what, but most of the humor fell flat for us – I thought it was rather campy.  I didn’t think the acting was particularly stellar and thought most of the movie was silly – maybe much of the humor was over my head.  The movie is only an hour and a half long, but it felt much longer to me.  There is one scene involving a dog that may upset animal lovers, and I felt it was totally unnecessary.  This movie wasn’t for me, but critics and fans on sites like imdb and rotten tomatoes gave it positive reviews, so if you’re a fan of Anderson’s movies, you’ll probably want to see this one.

Sounds like a good movie…I had not heard of this one.

I went to see it last month with my mom and pretty much felt the same way. When I talk to my mom she keeps asking me “What was the name of that awful movie you took me to again?” She’s a little more direct than I am. My brother loved it though, but he is part of the indie crowd :)

I thought the previews looked good for this movie, but I figured I would rent it at some point. Sorry you didn’t enjoy it as much.

I had to look up Wes Anderson to see what else he’s done–I haven’t heard of this one at all. After seeing the list of his films I think this is one that I’d need to watch alone on DVD. Scott is not a big fan of these types of films. Sorry it didn’t work for you either!

I’m a huge Anderson fan and can’t wait for this to come out here. Having said that, I can see why his stuff (and particularly the humour) isn’t for everyone.

I hadn’t heard of it before now. The trailer looks really good, but if it fell flat for you it might do the same for me.

    I’m much more of a conventional-movie fan!

I hadn’t heard of this one, but the idea of 12 year olds falling in love (since The Girl is now 12) kind of scares me. LOL

Any movie that will upset animal lovers is off my list! I don’t know how a love affair and running away would work with 12 year old children. It sounds kind of weird!

This movie has been on our radar since it came out…the loaded cast alone got us all revved up. But I think it was only showing in one theater here, and it was while we were on vacation, so I think we may have to wait. Ultimately we WILL see it, it just may be on Netflix.

My inlaws swear it’s hysterical but I’m not convinced. Thanks for your honest review.

The video made me laugh, but if I see it, I’ll wait to rent it.

Hmmmm, I might wait for DVD for this one.

As soon as I know it will upset animal lovers it’s out for me. The description and your reaction to the movie pretty much ensures I wouldn’t like it much either.

I hadn’t even heard of the film before, but then I live in a very small town, so our theater only gets the biggest releases.

I’ve never heard of it but it doesn’t seem like one that I’d be rushing to see!

Wow…I know I haven’t heard of this one…you are a brave movie goer!

Oh thanks for the warning & review. I’m so glad I didn’t go see it …. looked too nuts or adolescent humor to me

I’ve never heard of this one. Too bad it disappointed.

Hmm, I hadn’t even heard of this movie before. Thanks for your honest review.

Never heard of this one, but it sounds like one I’ll watch of tv instead. Looking forward to, Hope Springs and The Odd Life of Timothy Green. Have a great weekend Kathy.

I remember liking Anderson’s Rushmore, but that’s it. This doesn’t appeal to me, especially knowing about the dog!

This is a new movie to me. I thought I’d been following new movies closely but, somehow, I missed this one. Sounds like it didn’t hurt that I missed it.

It feels to me that all the movies that have this sort of theme are the ones movie reviewers rave about but fall flat with the “rest of us.” Thanks for the great review of this one! I won’t be watching it in the theater.

Sorry this movie didn’t work for you. I haven’t seen it yet, but my husband and sister loved it and have been urging me to check it out. I’m on the fence with this director, so we’ll see. The scene with the dog sounds distressing.

One of Wes Anderson’s first movies, Rushmore, is one of my favorite movies of all time. He is an acquired taste I think. I need to check this movie out!
