I finally found some new words in my reading! My first two words came from Secret Keepers by Mindy Friddle.
1. demodicid – “Bobby leaned in closer and studied the man’s eyelashes, looking for a demodicid.”
Demodicid isn’t in my dictionary, so I Googled it and discovered that they are a genus of mites that are parasitic within the hair follicles of the host. This led me to spending far too much time looking at sites like this. I found it all rather disturbing.
2. cultivars – “”Every half-ass money-hungry plantsman will be out here soon, digging up samples from the beds, working on hybrids and cultivars.”"
I had an idea of what cultivar meant but looked it up to be sure. It is an organism, especially of an agricultural or horticultural variety or strain originating and persistent under cultivation.
My third word came from Rather Outspoken by Dan Rather.
3. dirk – “The worst were those who, after pretending to be friends for all those years, stealthily snuck around giving anonymous newspaper quotes and otherwise scheming to put the dirk in deep when I was down and hurting.”
A dirk is a long straight-bladed dagger.
