Saturday Snapshot

August 4, 2012
tags:

As I was walking into the grocery store the other day, I looked down and noticed this gorgeous moth.  I wish I had put something down beside it as a scale so you could see just how big it was.  I don’t know what kind it is but I think it’s a beauty.

Saturday Snapshot is hosted by Alyce of At Home With Books.  It’s easy to participate – just post a picture that was taken by you, a friend, or a family member and add your link on Alyce’s site.

Wow that is a gorgeous moth! LOVE those colors, I wonder if it is in the butterfly family. A few weeks I had seen a moth that I first thought it was a hummingbird. I googled it and it was an aptly named hummingbird moth, lol.
I’d love it if you would stop by and come see my pic for today.

It looks like a watercolor painting, so pretty. I love the way nature is so symmetrical too.

I’ve never seen a moth that color. Usually, I’m not crazy about moths. This one I like. It’s pretty, very unique. I think some people would have walked by without seeing it.

That is beautiful! I couldn’t resist hunting for the ID online and found that it’s an Imperial Moth – and so huge in the other photo at this moth page:

I’ve never seen a moth that big before in person. Was the moth in your photo that big?

It is…beautiful…and not scary at all!

Moths kind of creep me out–but I do love the color of your guy contrasted against the gray pavement.

That is an “Imperial Moth” (Eacles imperalis). They are huge, with a wingspan of up to 6 inches, and are one of the few saturniid species experiencing a decline due to the lack of woodlands. We have them here too, and I just love them.

weren’t you quick on the draw, I’m always fumbling with my camera, and by then the “thing” of interest has flown away.

Wow, how beautiful. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an Imperial moth. It may be too cold for them where I live (except this summer, of course, ha).

Oh wow! That is a beautiful moth! It looks like it should be in the fall tress or something, not in a parking lot! Great photo today!
