Once again I had to rely on my handy Word-a-Day Calendar. I chose these words because they’re words I think I can actually use.
1. star-chamber – “The new department manager’s star-chamber practices, from closed-door meetings to ultimatums and disastrous snap decisions, quickly alienated the staff.”
It surprised me to find out that star-chamber is an adjective. It means characterized by secrecy and often being irresponsibly arbitrary and oppressive.

2. traduce – “At the apex of the pop star’s career, several jealous rivals attempted to traduce his name with false allegations.”
Traduce is a verb that means to expose to shame or blame by means of falsehood and misrepresentation.

3. skosh – “The barista sprinkled a skosh of cinnamon onto the milky surface of the latte.”
Skosh is a noun that means a small amount: a bit or smidgen. I think it’s fun to say!

What words do you want to celebrate today?

I’m first! What a thrill! Thanks for the intro to some great words, Kathy! I didn’t know star chamber or traduce which is a very high fallutin word for a low down dirty thing to do. I do know ‘skosh’. Sadly, when I saw the word ‘skosh’ my first thought was OJ Simpson. I could be wrong but I remember a Levi jean commercial for Levi 505′s. The 505s were cut a little more generously than the classic 501s for guys who needed a little extra room. The spokesperson (I am pretty sure it was OJ Simpson) said “The have a skosh more room”. Anyone else remember that?
Skosh, you are right, it’s fun to say
Mmmm, I’d like a latte with a skosh of cinnamon right now…
Your words are all new to me, thank you for sharing!
Skosh is very fun!
Yep, skosk is definitely my favourite too. A skosk of cinnamon. Nice.
You stumped me with traduce, but I knew the other two. Great words, Kathy!
I’m sure that I’ve come across traduce recently, but had no memory of what it meant. The other two are completely new to me. Skosh does sound great. I’m disappointed that I didn’t get time to do my WWW post this week. I still like checking out what everyone else has found though.
All new to me this week, but I do like “skosh.”
Star-Chamber , I’ve heard of before, I like skosh too!
skosh is a great word. i have heard people say it but never saw it written.
What a great idea. Great way to expand your vocabulary. Think I may try to get something together for the next Wondrous Words Wednesday!
I’ve used skosh before, and as a word, I love it! Very nice choices today, my friend!
I don’t think I’ve heard of any of those words before! So I’ve learnt something new today
Skosh is a great word – I have used that one myself.
I learned “skosh” from my husband in college when we were dating. I wonder what the history and origins of “star-chamber” are. Puts me in mind of a star-shaped inner room from a spy novel or something. Or maybe a room with a ceiling that rolls back so you can view the stars (a la Swiss Family Robinson).
Skosh is fun to say! Great words this week, Kathy! I enjoy my “wordy” calendar as well.
Oooh, I like “skosh”! I’ll definitely be using that one — another great new word!
“Skosh” is now my new favorite word. Thank you!
lol. Those words are so fun!
Like them.
Skoch is a big one in these parts!!! I find it odd that star-chamber is an adjective too!
I have used the word skosh!!! Yes, I am smart!
I didn’t know about Star-chamber . That’s an interesting one.
