Author event and giveaway: Ann B. Ross

May 1, 2012

Ann Ross was back in town for another Book Your Lunch event hosted by Fiction Addiction and I didn’t want to miss it because she’s almost as entertaining as her Miss Julia books.  Ann earned a PhD in English from the University of North Carolina and taught at UNC Asheville for years.

Ann has always wanted to write and when she started her first Miss Julia book, she wanted to write about a character who was well mannered, religious, self-righteous, stringent, and proud.  The book wasn’t meant to be humorous – in fact, it was meant to be a deep, dark literary work.  She wrote down all the things she was too strictly raised to say.  She said Miss Julia still talks to her and she sees ideas everywhere.

When the Hallmark channel approached Ann about making a Miss Julia movie, she considered it, but decided to turn it down when she learned that she would relinquish all control and Miss Julia would no longer belong to her.  Ann said it was a difficult decision to make, but she has never regretted it.

The newest Miss Julia book, Miss Julia to the Rescue, debuted at number 21 on The New York Times bestseller list.  Ann has a contract for 2 more Miss Julia books and is currently working on the next one.  She said she doesn’t have an end to the series in mind and will continue to write them as long as readers enjoy them.  She read some of the emails she’s received and it sounds like her readers really enjoy them, so the series should be around for a while!

I got Ann to autograph a copy of Miss Julia to the Rescue for one lucky reader.  To enter to win an autographed copy of MISS JULIA TO THE RESCUE simply fill out the entry form.  Contest is open worldwide – one entry per person, please.  I will use random.org to determine the winner. Contest ends at midnight EDT Thursday, May 10, 2012.   Winner will be announced on Friday, May 11, 2012.  Comments are welcome (and appreciated) but will not get you an entry in the contest.

I’ve read as far as Miss Julia and the Wedding. I might not have the exact title. I loved Miss Julia from the very first book. I knew the author must be an awfully kind person to think of such a fun series. Thanks for telling more about the author. I’m glad she didn’t give her rights away just for a movie deal.

I’m embarrassed to admit that I haven’t heard of these books. They sound so delightful! I should try to check them out.

I understand why she turned down the movie opportunity, but wouldn’t Miss Julia be a hoot!

I love that she stuck to her guns and wouldn’t let her series get changed with the adaptation to film. She sounds like she has a lot of spunk and though I haven’t read any of her books, I bet I would like them!

She sounds so cute! I must check her out.
Though I must admit, I’m sad we won’t be seeing her on Hallmark.

What a fun author event. The author and Miss Julia sound lovely. It must have been tempting to agree to a movie but I understand why she wouldn’t want to.

I have not read any Miss Julia books yet. But they sound good, so I will keep my eyes open!

    Hi Kathy,

Another great author and series, that I haven’t come across before.

‘Miss Julia’, sounds quite reminiscent of an American ‘Miss Marple’, although if the film or television rights had been granted, I think that the character would have come across more like a ‘Jessica Fletcher in Murder She Wrote’

I am so glad that you got to meet her, if you are a fan of the books and thanks for sharing.

    Yvonne

Nice post and I admire her for not letting a film be made where she’d have to relinquish the rights to her character.

Oh this sound like a lot of fun!

I haven’t read any of this series but I’ve looked at the books so many times because they sound so good. One of these days I’ll pick up the first one.

So nice that her character was more important to her than a movie deal. I have to admire her for that.

Even though it wasn’t meant to be humorous at first, it sounds like the books are.

Wow. Turning down tv money is gutsy. I haven’t read this series. Yet.
