Author event and giveaway: Bret Lott
I’m sure Bret Lott’s name is familiar with most readers since one of his books, Jewel, was an Oprah Book Club pick in 1999. I read Jewel way-back-when so I was excited to attend Bret’s literary lunch hosted by Hub City Books. I discovered that Bret was not a one hit wonder and has, in fact, written thirteen books. His newest, Dead Low Tide, is the sequel to The Hunt Club, a popular book he wrote in 1999.
Even though he was born in Los Angeles, Bret has southern roots – his mother’s from Mississippi and his father’s from Texas – so he grew up eating grits. He began teaching creative writing at the College of Charleston in 1998 and has lived there ever since, except for a three year stint as the editor of The Southern Review.
Bret says writers sees themselves as outsiders looking in. He doesn’t outline as he writes. His wife and his agent are his first readers and will tell him when something doesn’t work. There was a lot of enthusiasm for his work at the lunch, so I’d say they’re doing a great job.
I got Bret to autograph a copy of Dead Low Tide for one lucky reader. To enter to win an autographed copy of DEAD LOW TIDE simply fill out the entry form. Contest is open worldwide – one entry per person, please. I will use random.org to determine the winner. Contest ends at midnight EST Friday, March 30, 2012. Winner will be announced on Saturday, March 31, 2012. Comments are welcome (and appreciated) but will not get you an entry in the contest.

Sounds like another fun luncheon. I think I’ve only read one of his books — the Oprah pick, but I did enjoy it. I’d love to try another one.
I loved this book in audio and would love to have a signed print copy. Great giveaway! I need to go back and read The Hunt Club. Sounds like a great event.
This looks like a good one. I haven’t read the previous book, but I read that this one stands on its own. Thanks for the giveaway.
Another fun outing!!!
I’m so jealous of all your author events!
I wish we had more author events around here- you would think being so close to Minneapolis there would be! Looks like so much fun!
I tell you, you have the best lunches. It’s very hard not to be jealous of all your wonderful author events. Thanks for the giveaway, sounds like another great book.
I have only read Jewel by Lott myself. I suppose I knew he had written other things, but I didn’t go hunting them out…
Thank you so much for this author event video. He is very funny and I’d like to read his work.
I read Jewel many years ago, and loved it, and am so glad that you got a chance to attend this event at Hub City! I bet it was so nice to get the chance to see Erin again! It sounds like Lott has a lot of fans, and for good reason!
I love how he says most of his books are about a man and wife standing in the kitchen talking! I haven’t read any Lott so this would be a fun one to win. Great giveaway, anyway.
Also Kathy, if you get a chance, please check out my post today. Another indie bookstore is going out of biz and I’m trying to get bloggers to post a picture and a link to a local indie bookstore near them. THANKS!
I’ve remember reading Jewel. I’ll have to look into getting this one too.
Thank you for hosting this giveaway, Kathy. I posted it in blog’s sidebar (it worked well this time!).
I just read the reviews on Amazon and it sounds fascinating!
I recognized the name and can picture the cover of Jewel, but I never read it. Another awesome event.
Thanks for offering it to all. Much appreciated.
I loved Jewel…one of my favorite books that I read that year. I’m so darn jealous of you!
Looks like a fantastic Read!!!!!
