Saturday Snapshot

December 10, 2011

One of the fun features of downtown Greenville is a project called “Mice on Main.”  It consists of nine mice sculptures scattered along Main Street.  This project was conceived and implemented by a high school student and is intended as a scavenger hunt for children.  He got the idea from Goodnight Moon – a book his mother read to him every night when he was young.  Since Carl and I are still kids at heart, we enjoy looking for them too.  Some of the mice are easy to spot and others require a little more searching.   The top photo shows one on the lower right hand corner of the Windstream sign and the bottom photo shows it close up.

Saturday Snapshot is hosted by Alyce of At Home With Books.  It’s easy to participate – just post a picture that was taken by you, a friend, or a family member and add your link on Alyce’s site.

    What a darling idea!

Great idea. In Binghamton, NY, since the creator of B.C. comic strip was from the suburbs, you’ll find B.C. characters all over the place but they are really big. I like the idea of little mice that you have to search for.

What fun! Now that’s the kind of thing I need to give me the spirit of the holidays. Thanks for sharing…and for visiting my blog.

this is great, that book Good Night Moon sure inspires doesn’t it? I was reading it to my little grandniece on Thursday, and it was a truly special experience.

I am a big fan of public art and I think those are fabulous! What fun for kids and grown-ups alike!

I love hearing tales of how reading inspires people. What a great idea!

  8. December 10, 2011 12:21 pm

Sounds like fun. I’d be running around with my binoculars trying to find them.

That is so cool! I wonder how many people do a double take (especially those frightened of rodents)? :)

What an awesome project! I love the idea of looking for the hidden mice

Love this! My mom loved mice and had a collection, so the grandkids called her “Granny Mouse”.

This is fantastic! What a fun, creative and unique idea! I was surprised by how small the mice are….for some reason I pictured them a bit bigger. No wonder they’re difficult to find, but it makes it all the more fun!
Have you and Carl found all of the mice?!

  16. December 10, 2011 2:55 pm

    What a cute idea!

I HATE mice but would love to see these statues. Thanks for posting them.

  18. December 10, 2011 4:53 pm

You brought back the fondest memories of both of my daughters searching for the mouse in “Goodnight Moon!” Thanks for the great shots, Kathy!

  19. December 10, 2011 5:23 pm

What a great idea. I’d love to go looking for them too :-)

  20. December 10, 2011 5:27 pm

What a fun idea! And that mouse is so cute!

  21. December 10, 2011 6:16 pm

That is awesome….I love that little mouse!!

  22. December 10, 2011 6:51 pm

I love that he was inspired by Goodnight, Moon!

  23. December 10, 2011 7:26 pm

I love it! If I ever get to Greenville I will surely look for the mice! And I will be getting Goodnight Moon to read to my grandkids!

The young brings exciting ideas like the scattered mice sculptures. Laughing while one searches.

  25. December 10, 2011 9:06 pm

How cool! If I recall correctly, this is another creative public art project by a high schooler in your town. You’ve got a really cool town!!!

  26. December 10, 2011 9:50 pm

Lot’s of towns have been doing similar art projects around town as a fundraiser. This sounds like lots of fun.

  27. December 10, 2011 10:27 pm

neat idea.. i should see if any of the towns around here have something similar that maybe i have not heard of.. the kids love exploring and looking for things like this.. Our local Trader Joes hides ‘Ricardo the Penguin’ (a stuffed penguin doll) in the store somewhere and if a kid finds him, they get a treat (mostly fruit rolls which they enjoy!) and the kids want to visit just to look for Ricardo

  28. December 11, 2011 1:15 am

Such a cute idea. I’d love looking for the mice, too. Not so fond of the real thing, though!

  29. December 11, 2011 4:04 am

That’s great- I love fun sculptures like that.

  30. December 11, 2011 9:01 am

This is the cutest thing, and such a great idea! I wish that our city had more things like this!

  31. December 11, 2011 2:12 pm

Since I’ll be in Greenvile the first weekend in May for a conference I am going to have to keep a look-out for the mice.

  32. December 11, 2011 7:58 pm

Those are cute and must be fun to find for kids visiting. We used to have a bunch of painted pandas throughout DC when the baby panda was first born. Kids loved spotting them, and I loved taking their pictures when I saw them.

  33. December 11, 2011 11:31 pm

I love it! I would have to find them all too. Gage has never made it past the third page in Goodnight Moon. There’s not enough for him to do. He need flaps right now!

  34. December 12, 2011 6:28 am

I adore that this concept has been conceived by a child for children. Fantastic!

  35. December 12, 2011 1:42 pm

What a cool project — thanks for sharing the photos!

  36. December 12, 2011 1:47 pm

We have cows on parade in Harrisburg.

  37. December 12, 2011 2:54 pm

That’s very cool. Our downtown did the same thing a few years ago, just bigger sculptures and a lot more of them, though I’m a little jelaous that they diddn’t do something like this. My favorite of our downtown ones is a bronze bird that sits atop a traffic light. You won’t see it unless you know it’s there.

  38. December 13, 2011 8:24 pm

I love the whole idea of trying to find the mice..how adorable is that? And to learn that he was influenced by a book his mother read to him! Amazing where books can lead you!

  39. December 14, 2011 8:18 pm

What a great idea! Some of the cities near us have put sculptures of animals around the area but I don’t think any of them hid anything. So clever and fun!

  40. December 15, 2011 2:27 pm

Love love love this!! Especially as Goodnight Moon is kind of a nightly staple for me these days. ;)
