Upcoming events that are better than college football

August 12, 2011

Anyone who knows me, knows I’m a huge college football fan.  I plan my day around game time during football season. The Hokies are my favorite team, but I’ll pretty much watch any ACC or SEC game.   This fall, there are several events that are worth missing football for.  (I may not be watching the game on these days, but you better believe I’ll have alerts set up on my phone!)

The Decatur Festival of the Book  (September 2 – 4, 2011) Decatur, Georgia

The Largest Independent Book Festival in the Nation

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical is an annual, free book festival that takes place over Labor Day weekend in Decatur, Georgia at several venues located in and around the downtown Decatur Square. Conceived in 2005 and launched in 2006, the festival brings more than 300 authors to Decatur for the holiday weekend. The authors give readings, talks, and panel discussions. The event is free and open to the public.

Authors include Pulitzer Prize winning and best-selling authors of fiction in many genres and nonfiction on diverse topics. The authors come to Decatur from across the country and international points as well.

SIBA Trade Show (September 17 – 19, 2011) Charleston, South Carolina

This will be my third year attending SIBA and it’s a wonderful weekend full of books and authors.  It’s similar, but smaller (think more intimate), than BEA.  The Trade Show services bookstores in the southeast and kindly allows book bloggers to attend as press.

Club Read just sounds too wonderful to be true!

Hmmm I’m scheduled to be in Spartanburg the week of September 12th, so will be in SC. I wonder where I will be the next week. I could possibly catch a day or two of SIBA!

    Terrific events!

  4. August 12, 2011 9:15 am

Oh man, I’m SO bummed that I’m missing the DBF, this year!!! I love the event but I’ll be visiting my parents in Orlando that week/end. Have fun!

I thought about Club Read, but I just can’t justify the cost right now. I wish they had a ticket option that was “everything but the lodging”, because it’s only a hour and a half from my house and I would gladly drive back and forth for the honor of sleeping in my own bed.

Nuts! I can’t go to any of these. Oh well, I love, love, love college football so you know where I’ll be.

  7. August 12, 2011 10:37 am

You have a lot of great events coming up! I’m sure you’ll have a fantastic time at each.

  8. August 12, 2011 10:55 am

Are you just trying to make the rest of us feel bad? LOL! I’m ready for some Penn State football!

  9. August 12, 2011 11:13 am

I wish I could get to SIBA. It sounds like a lot of fun.

You know I love my Buckeyes and this is going to be a tough season. But I’ll still be there every Saturday (at least in spirit).

  11. August 12, 2011 11:51 am

Great events! Georgia is definitely a wonderful place to be in the fall both for college football and the Decatur Book Fest.

  12. August 12, 2011 11:55 am

You know which one that I am most excited over, and I can’t wait to see you there! Last year’s SIBA experience was the bookish highlight of my year, and so I am really looking forward to this time around as well. It sounds like you’ve got all kinds of bookish events to attend this fall, which is really cool, Kathy!

You are my kind of person, Kathy – football and books, and throw in some good food. Life doesn’t get any better. Have a great time at all your events. You are living in such a book-rich area of the country. Enjoy.

  14. August 12, 2011 12:05 pm

Wow, so many things to look forward to :)

  15. August 12, 2011 12:32 pm

I’ve always wanted to go to the Decatur one.

  16. August 12, 2011 1:10 pm

Wow, I didn’t realize what that Club Read was all about. But the price tag is pretty stiff…yikes! Way way excited for SIBA. It was almost sensory overload for me last year!

  17. August 12, 2011 1:26 pm

Wish I could. They all sounds like great events.

  18. August 12, 2011 1:35 pm

If I was within driving distance of SIBA I would love to go, but I’m a little too far away. We need something like that in the Midwest.

  19. August 12, 2011 2:30 pm

Wish I had something like this closer to where we live! Enjoy!

  21. August 12, 2011 4:14 pm

I won’t be attending any of these, but I will be at the new 2-day National Book Festival in September in Washington, D.C.

  22. August 12, 2011 4:39 pm

Great events…do you read while you watch football?

  23. August 12, 2011 10:41 pm

Wait, so you aren’t an AUBURN fan???

  24. August 12, 2011 10:41 pm

I can understand being torn!! My son and I love to eat pizza and watch Michigan State and University of Michigan football!!!

  25. August 13, 2011 4:59 pm

WOW your schedule is full of bookish love. Sighs… going to live it all vicariously through you :)

  26. August 14, 2011 11:26 am

I think…that I might not be able to attend SIBA this year. I thought I would, but I have to be in Denver that same week for work…oy.

  27. August 15, 2011 8:26 pm

I wish these were closer to my neck of the woods … they all sound fantastic.
