Bridesmaids
When Dougie asks Lillian to marry him, she asks her lifelong friend, Annie, to be the maid of honor. Annie’s going through a rough patch right now, but really wants to be in the wedding. At Lillian and Dougie’s engagement party she meets the bridesmaids and she and one of Lillian’s newest friends, Helen, instantly form a rivalry for Lillian’s affection. They try to outdo each other right from the start. As the wedding plans progress, Annie’s life unravels and it seems like everything she tries to do turns out wrong.
We needed a laugh, so a friend and I went to see Bridesmaids. Full of bathroom and bawdy humor, the movie is funny, but it wasn’t a laugh a minute like I thought it would be. I would say it’s the female equivalent of The Hangover. I know I’m “over the hill,” but there were times when I couldn’t help but think, “Is that really the way young women think and talk these days? I must really be out of it.”
I wasn’t familiar with any of the actors in the movie, except Jill Clayburgh (showing my age once again) but I felt like it was well cast and everyone turned in a solid performance.
The movie did give me a little food for thought. Why do women try to compete with each other so much? Why can’t we get along and support each other? Bridesmaids is fun, but not particularly outstanding.

Female version of The Hangover? I am not sure this book is for me then since I didn’t enjoy The Hangover. Bridesmaids seems like an entertaining movie but lacking depth.
Even I feel like I am over the hill sometimes. But then I just blame it on now being American. Then again 10 years ago when I still was a teen I still did not talk like one.
Anyway so wanna see this one
That is pretty much what I thought when I saw the trailers. I don’t know that you have to be “over the hill” (which you are not…I’m thinking over the hill is about 90?) to shake your head at the behaviors of these women. You just have to be a decent human being with a little common sense. It does always horrify me at how women undermine each other. Gives us all a bad name! I think it all goes back to lack of self-esteem.
This sounds like a fun movie. Sometimes the bridal party can turn ugly, I’ve heard stories from friends…
I’ll have to check this one out.
Haven’t seen this one yet. I’m supposed to go this weekend with a friend, but I’m not sure how much I’ll like it. I’ve heard the humor is really similar to SNL, which I don’t really watch, so … who knows. Anyhow, l enjoyed your honest review – definitely makes one think about plonking down 10 bucks to see this movie.
I’m pretty sure they are just caricatures. I’ve seen a few movies like this. I’m guessing those women are more my age, and I can promise you I haven’t met anyone like that. Competitive, yes! Cat-fights or senseless challenges, nah!
Great analysis! I hate the women-competing-against-one-another thing! My husband and I have speculated that it has been encouraged a lot by the diamond industry (i.e., the size of the diamond is a way to win a p$%-ing contest against other women!
Yes! Women are always competing. You think men would be worse at this than us but so not true.
I love the chubby gal. She use to be in Samantha Who?
Yup according to my sister, who teaches you women, the talk is unbelievable. I though this might be a funny movie but sometimes all the laughs are shown in the trailer. Still good to spend time with a friend. I hear you on the competition thing… WHY? I believe I lost a good friend, or at least I thought she was my friend, over such nonesense. It’s been a year now and I still can’t process what happened. I am old, obviously.
Thanks for the review but I’m definitely over the hill and wouldn’t pay good money to see a movie like this.
Im sorry, but I just hate modern commedies. lol
I love the trailers – that really made me laugh! Especially the fight club bit.
I saw the movie,it was very funny, lot of laughs.
I’ll be waiting for this one on Netflix but I’m looking forward to it. I know it’s mainly potty humor but that can be funny too.
I have heard that this movie is really funny, but I am glad to see your more sedate review and the fact that you compare it to The Hangover really tells me a lot about it. I am probably going to be waiting for this one on Netflix instead of running out to the theaters for it. Thanks for the honest review, Kathy!
I did not find this nearly as entertaining as The Hangover, but maybe that’s just because I couldn’t relate to Annie at all. The whole story centered around her and how the wedding drove her nuts, but I thought that she was so unbelievably insane, rude, and overly jealous the whole time that I just couldn’t get into it. I found it funny at times, but not that funny.
I went to this a few weeks ago with a friend and while I was for warned about the bathroom scene… the opening of the movie was probably the worst part for me…. too much. I did enjoy the story line (I have a tendency to pick out what I like in books and movies) and the over all movie left me feeling sad for Helen who on the outside appeared to have so much.
I think I enjoyed it because the friend I was with had a really bad day at work and she needed a laugh so we probably laughed more than usual. It was a good unwind movie, but yeah…. I dont need to see it again.
I’ve never even heard of this movie! I think I’ve been in my writing cave for so long that I’m totally out of touch. LOL
Thanks for a brief, honest review. I knew my Facebook reviews by the Chelsea Handler – wannabes wasn’t telling me the full story. I think I will wait for Netflix.
I had to see this movie because I LOVE Melissa McCarthy from Mike & Molly. I didn’t think it was a laugh a minute either but I was pleasantly surprised that it was set in Wisconsin! That overhead shot of the lakefront was awesome! I wasn’t expecting the actor that played the cop and I loved him in Pirate Radio. I HATED the bathroom scene – they took that waaaaaaaay too far.
I haven’t seen The Hangover but I do want to see this movie as I adore Melissa McCarthy from her Gilmore Girls days and I hear that Jon Hamm from Mad Men is in the movie as well:) I can attest to the fact that women can be very competitive, it’s hard for me to relate to and I steer clear of those friendships! I may wait until the move comes out on DVD though.
I rarely see a movie in the theater but I might have to make an exception for this one!
Good question..why do we compete so much with each other?????
I think I’ll pass on this. I don’t normally like movies like that, and the comparison to The Hangover really makes me not want to watch it.
I’ve heard other movie reviewers call it the female version of The Hangover. This is not a movie that interests me, but neither does The Hangover, even though Bradley Cooper’s in it and he’s dreamy!
i feel like the last movie i saw in the theater was Gone With the Wind…but i think it was actually toy story 3 with my nephew (june, 2010). i don’t get to the movies too much–i get crazy from people talking, texting, and generally being rude in the theaters. i guess i’m getting grumpy in my old age.
i’d prefer to wait for movies on netflix. sorry this one didn’t live up to your expectations but glad you had a few laughs.
This movie really sounds like the female version of The Hangover, which I loved.
The trailer was hilarious so I’m definitely going to go see this. Great review.
I loved this one. Yes, the opeing scene and the bathroom scenes were off putting, but I was surprised that in the midst of the comedy that I felt a little sympathy for Annie by the end. I do think women can be this competitive, but I saw is as more of a spoof on those kind of women. I was familiar with 3 of the bridesmaids, but I watch SNL and loved Gilmore Girls.
My husband and I saw it, and I liked it. I believe we are near the same age, I might be a bit older, and I knew the actors and yet these characters were all a bit exaggerated and over the top. I laughed a lot and loved the ending….an ode to the 80′s!
Certainly not winning awards but good for a laugh.
I kinda felt the same way as you. I laughed, but didn’t think it was as funny as my daughters did. They thought it was absolutely hilarious!
I liked the original The Hangover and I liked Bridesmaids too. I was familiar with half of the bridal party.
The thing about Bridesmaids that makes it better than The Hangover is it has some heart. Annie finally decides she’s allowed to have her dream even if it was a disappointment the first time around… and she does deserve a nice guy.
The trying to get a ticket montage had me rolling in my seat.
Would you believe I never saw the Hangover… Girls from the office have come back raving about the Bridesmaid and maybe now it’s time to go see it too.
I don’t think I know anything about this movie at all until you mentioned it. I’m not sure why women need to compete also and I really don’t see the point. The world would be a better place if we could all support one another.
I’ve heard such good think about this movie … but I did love The Hangover!
I’ve heard good things about this one…but I’m not sure how I’ll like it. I’m sure I’ll end up renting it when it comes out on DVD. Glad you enjoyed it, even if it wasn’t as funny as you had hoped. I’m not sure why women have to compete with each other so much. It’s never really made sense to me.
I felt the same way you did. I went with my mom to see this. About 15 min. in my mom and I looked at each other. It has to get better because my friend saw it. It doesn’t it keeps going with the absurdity, foul language, and the sexual inuendos. But, still liked it. But was not a great movie. Thanks for posting. Instead I’ll be looking out for the Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks movie coming soon/
