Author event and giveaway: Jim Minick

May 26, 2011

I was lucky enough to meet Jim Minick, the author of The Blueberry Years (my review), at SIBA last year.  I thought he was such a nice guy and I loved his book, so I knew I wanted to go see him when he was signing at my local bookstore.  Jim still teaches at Radford University in Virginia and is currently working on a new novel about a healer, that is loosely based on his great-grandmother.

Even though Jim and his wife no longer own the organic blueberry farm they started, I discovered that he is a blueberry advocate!  He told us that everyone should eat some blueberries every day!  He has planted some blueberry bushes at his new home.  The new owners of their organic farm don’t maintain it the way they did, but he does allow people to pick berries on the honor system.

When I asked Jim if he would make a short video for me, he asked me if I make all authors do that.  The bookseller and I both said yes at the same time!

I loved The Blueberry Years and would like to see it get more attention, so I had Jim autograph a copy for one lucky reader.  To enter to win THE BLUEBERRY YEARS by Jim Minick, simply fill out the entry form.  Contest is open worldwide.  I will use random.org to determine the winner. Contest ends at midnight EST Monday, June 6, 2011.   Winners will be announced on Tuesday, June 7, 2011.  Comments are welcome (and appreciated) but will not get you an entry in the contest.

The Blueberry Years has been on the top of my wishlist for awhile (since your review) :)

Blueberries are a favorite around here; they are how I used to get my daughter to eat breakfast in the morning — blueberry pancakes, waffles, muffins…you get the idea :)

This looks like a great book. Thanks for this post!

He really was just the nicest guy. I haven’t read his book yet (I know, I’m hanging my head in shame) but know that I will because my book is signed and I want to get it to the ALL event at some point. This book would surely feed into my “living off the earth” fantasy that I have.

I love blueberries! And my brother can’t even get through a day without them!

We can seldom get decent blueberries, around here. They’re usually molded by the time they get to us! Sounds like the author is a very nice guy. I love it that you torment authors by filming them. ;)

Ohn this is neat! I haven’t read it but it looks like something my grammy and I would like to read, together. She was always my blueberry picking buddy in the summers.

Nice video. He seems so personable. I actually do try to eat blueberries as often as possible. I’ll have to read this book and hopefully understand better how they are grown. And, he did say recipes.

Blueberry Years looks great! I’d love to learn more about what it’s like to farm them.

Thank you for doing the video Jim. I love, love Blueberries! Picked a lot of them in my teen years.

I’d enjoy this book. A part of me has always wanted to have a farm… organic fruits, veggies and chickens!

My mom brought home some blueberries from her Switzerland trip and I loved, loved, loved them. I hope to get a chance to read the book. Thanks for the review, Kathy!
