Review: Bossypants
I’m sure most people know Tina Fey from Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock, or one of her movies. If you’re a fan of her humor, like I am, you’ll love her book, Bossypants. Written as a series of autobiographical essays, Bossypants shows off Fey’s trademark humor and I found it to be laugh out loud funny.
While telling her story, Fey’s not afraid to voice her opinions on a few issues and even give a little advice. What I loved about the book was that I laughed my way through it, but found myself thinking about it days later. That’s not to say Fey takes herself too seriously – the book is written in a breezy, self-deprecating tone that made me feel like I know Fey and could actually picture myself sitting and chatting with her.
Fey’s experience as a writer shines through in this book. I found the writing to be solid and the essays to be well constructed. The book is a quick read if you can stop laughing long enough to concentrate on it. Bossypants is a must read for Tina Fey fans!

I love Tina Fey ever since her Sarah Palin run on SNL. I bet this one would be one I would like as well. Thanks Kathy
I’ve been on hold for her audio for about a month now, and I’m still number 17! I can’t wait to listen to it. The bonus being that Fey narrates the book herself. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
One of the women that I volunteer with at the library is listening to this on audio, and everyday she comes in saying how much she’s enjoying it. She said that she’s stretching it out to make it last!
I can’t decide whether I want to read this or listen to it…either way, I know I’m going to pick it up soon. Thanks for the great review
Oh man I LOVE her! Everyone keeps quoting this to me. I HAVE to read it, already!
Sounds like a fun read (or listen) and I know for a fact my husband would love it
Omg I LOVE Tina Fey! I can’t wait to read Bossypants . I admire her so much!
Like Sandy, I would love to listen to this one since it is read by Tina Fey herself!
I haven’t watched Tina Fey that much in recent years, and only really know her from her early days at SNL, but I do think she’s really funny, and would love to read this book. It’s not often that a book makes me laugh out loud, and sometimes I need that, you know? Great review, Kathy. I am so glad you had such fun with this book!
Thanks for the great review! A blogging friend recently recommended this to me. I don’t know her from SNL or 30 Rock. I’ve only read a few pieces in the New Yorker, and was very taken with her writing and her subject matter. I look forward to the book. Like The Book Girl, I can’t decide whether to read the print version or listen – maybe I’ll do both!
I don’t watch much TV but a good book that makes you laugh throughout is a winner.
I’m glad you loved this book too! Tina Fey is so amazing and this book made me love her even more!
I like the title. Sounds like a name a 7 year old would call someone.
A book that makes me laugh, but leaves me thinking sounds like I book I want to read!
She’s so funny, must read this.
I am still at #43 at the library for this book. I’m glad to hear it stayed with you for days and brought so much pleasure.
I’m glad you enjoyed this book! I’m on the waiting list for it so I can’t wait to get it and read i. My friends have been telling me how funny it is though.
I’m glad this one worked for you. I find, too often, that comedians aren’t that funny in real life and that their lives are rather depressing. I’m glad this was not the case with Fey.
I love Tina Fey and I’m so looking forward to listening to this. I think this is definitely one of those books that benefit from the author reading it.
I love her when she plays Sarah Palin, I’m afraid that I don’t really pay attention anyother time. I may have to read the book so I can find out more about her. Thanks for the review.
Glad you enjoyed this one.
Sounds like it’s exactly what I expected. I’ll be looking forward to reading it.
I’m glad to see that you liked this! I’ve been meaning to read it some time!
So true — this was a funny and entertaining book. I also liked how she got a little more sentimental about being a mom towards the end.
Glad to hear you liked this one. I wasn’t sure if it would be good at all, but now I’ll have to look for it at the library.
Lol, ok so I will not read it but it does sound fun
Did you see her on Saturday Night Live last Saturday…she is genuinely funny.
If Tina Fey is reading the audio book of Bossypants, then I’m sure it must be just as hilarious as anything read by David Sedaris.
I’ve just started reading Bossypants and I’m having a hard time putting it down. Its very funny and the short chapters offer just snippets into her life. I can only imagine what it must be like to be in the same room with her.
Yayyy! I’m so glad it lived up to the hype. And that cover is just priceless.
I want to get the audio so I can listen to Tina read it. I LOVE her (in a completely non-stalkerish kinda way).
I love love love Tina Fey and I’m so excited to listen to this book. I treated myself to the audio version for Mother’s Day. I hope I don’t look crazy on my walks when I start laughing out loud.
I love Tina Fey! Did you see her on this past week’s SNL. Hilarious. I have been itching to get my hands on this book, but I’ve been so busy. I know that the second I get it, my other responsibilities won’t seem quite as necessary…
Happy to hear you liked this one. I love Tina Fey and want to read this but I’ll be honest that cover totally puts me off!
I’m so excited to read this! I requested the audio version from the library so I’m sure it’ll be awhile, but it will be worth the wait!
I’m so offended by the brief moments I saw of Tina Fey mocking Sarah Palin that I wouldn’t even pick up one of her books, let alone read it. She is so rude, in my opinion, which to many comes across as funny.
I adore Tina Fey. This sounds like a great book. Definitely putting on the book list.
I’m in the mood for something funny, so I’ll keep this one in mind.
I have to admit that cover is hilarious… That man arm… scary
She cracks me up and I’ve enjoyed her in the movies she’s been in lately. This one sounds good for some great laughs and a chance to get to know her a bit better.
I can’t wait to read this one! Tina Fey is hilarious, and I’m sure her book will be too.
Glad you liked this one Kathy. I’ve been watching 30 Rock episodes while on maternity leave (hilarious at 3 am!) and so I picked up her book this weekend. Can’t wait for the laughs.
Enjoy BEA. Wishing I was there with you all!
