The Lincoln Lawyer
I was really excited when I heard about the movie The Lincoln Lawyer, based on the book of the same name by Michael Connelly, so I made arrangements for Carl and I to see it with friends. (Both Carl and I have read the book, but our friends haven’t.)
I thought the casting, especially Matthew McConaughey as Mickey Haller, was terrific. For the most part, the movie followed the book (my review), although some things weren’t explained as well in the movie as they were in the book – such as Mickey’s connection with his administrative assistant. Even with that, I felt the tension that made the book such a page turner was missing from the movie. At first, I suspected it was because I had just finished the book and could remember all of the details, but all four of us agreed that the movie dragged in parts. It seemed that we all enjoyed the movie, but none of us loved it. This might be one to rent rather than see at the theater. The bottom line is, the book is better than the movie, but they’re both entertaining.
My book club saw the movie last night…we have the same sentiments as you do.
We did love the all the “blue eyes.”
I really am interested in the story, so I think I will have to check out the book instead of the movie.
I am a huge fan of the book but it’s been so many years since I read the book. I can’t wait to see it! I think I can tolerate some minor dragging given the cast! I’m reading another Mickey Haller book right now and I just love him!
Can I just say how much I love Matthew McConaughey! Especially in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days!

I was away when you wrote your review for the book, but I did read it ( I just couldn’t leave a comment). It seems like the book was a lot more tightly paced than the movie, from reading both of your descriptions of them, and though I haven’t tried anything by Connelly yet, I think I would like to try the book. Thanks for the great review on both. It does sound like an interesting story to peruse!
I’ve been waiting for Matthew McConaughey to finally make a film that wasn’t some fluffy romantic comedy. I think the last one I really truly enjoyed him in was A Time to Kill, which was what? Fifteen years ago and his first film? Yikes! Most of his recent films have just been silly nonsense, so I am really looking forward to this one!
I haven’t read the book, should I before or after seeing the movie? I will definitely wait for Netflix to watch though.

Isn’t that normally the case? You read the book and really like it, then see the movie and think the best parts of the book are missing. I always hesitate to see a movie made from a book I’ve read, unless everyone is raving about it.
Sounds like I should rad the book and just skip the movie.

I loved him in A Time to Kill and he looks so good in this movie too! I’m so excited for all these books-into-movies MOVIES this year. The Help, Water for Elephants and Something Borrowed. Also Harry Potter and Twilight too!
Sometimes it doesn’t help when you read and then see too close together. I always find myself noticing the stuff they left out of the movie.

I’m a self-confessed snoot when it comes to movies made from books. My husband is a Connelly fan and I think I’ll read this one but I won’t be going to the movie. We might rent it later on. Hollywood sure can mess up a good read, can’t they?

Movies just don’t seem to hold my attention the way they once did. The trailer for the movie did get me curious to read the book.

I’m sorry it didn’t live up to your expectations based on the book. I think there was just so much in the book that it was hard for them to include it all in the movie. But, I really loved the movie.
I saw you and someone else buzzing about this one on twitter but I had never heard of the book or seen a preview of the movie! I must be living under a rock. You definitely have me curious (Matthew McConaughey also helps with that curiosity).
