Guest review – Eon: Dragoneye Reborn
I’d like to thank my sister, Karen, for her latest review. This one’s for a book that’s way out of my comfort zone, but completely in hers. Here’s what she had to say about Eon: Dragoneye Reborn by Alison Goodman:
Twelve dragons of good fortune protect the country from nature’s extremes through the manipulation of energy. Rotating through a twelve year cycle, every year the new Ascending Dragon rises and has twice the power of the other dragons for that year. On the first day of the new year twelve candidates are presented to the Ascending Dragon. Dragoneyes are immensely powerful individuals ranking just below the emperor. Each of these twelve year old boys, gifted with the rare ability to see the dragon of his birth year, fervently hopes to be chosen as that year’s new Ascending Dragoneye apprentice. Eon is an unusual candidate in more ways than one. Bought by his master from a salt farm, he is lame; has the very rare ability to see not just one dragon, but all the dragons; is sixteen years old pretending to be twelve; and his most dangerous secret of all, that he is actually a she. Oddsmakers have his chances of success at 1,000:1, after all what dragon would choose a cripple? With such a heavy burden and so many depending on Eon, will Eona be true to herself?
In Eon Dragoneye Reborn, Alison Goodman has created a unique fantasy world based on the Chinese calendar. Her characters are empathetic and well drawn, and the imaginative plot is enthralling. This book is an American Library Association Best Young Adult Book Winner 2010. I think it is a winner, too. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and am very much looking forward to its sequel. I have only one caveat. Due to the sexual nature of some of the characters, I would only recommend it for older teens and adults of any age.

very appropriate review with the news of today. The Zodiac has all changed. I like the sound of this book.
I think I will enjoy this one as well. Sounds good! And thank you to your sister for this great review.
I’m with you Kathy, this is waaaaay out of my range, but it might be kind of fun to try something like this. Like I always tell my kids “Just try ONE BITE! You might like it!”.
This is out of my normal reading range as well. But, I’ve been trying to push myself and I do the idea of using the Chinese calendar.
This is also not the type of book that I would normally read, but I bet it would be great for my husband and kids. It sounds like this would fit perfectly in their fantasy libraries. Thanks for sharing this with us, Karen, and great review!
Very interesting, and good be something for me
Great review. I’m not sure I’d normally read this but it sure does sound good.
This has been on my TBR pile for at least a few years, now, and it always looks interesting, but it never quite makes it to the top of the stack. Nice to have another voice confirming that it’s worth reading, though!
This isn’t the kind of book I normally read. In all honesty, one look at the cover and I normally pass it by. But Karen has written and interesting review that makes me wonder if I’m being close-minded. I’m going to put this one on my TBR list. I might just gift it a try when I finish the review books I have to read.
Thank you Karen & Kathy foran intriguing review!

When I pulled your blog up this morning, I had to do a double-take! I couldn’t believe you were reviewing this type of book, but then I saw guest review and it all made sense.
This book probably isn’t one that I would pick up but the review was great. I look forward to more of your sister’s reviews.
Not in my comfort zone either but I like that your sister stepped in and “did” the book for you. Just what a good sister should do. She’s also a good writer. I think this must run in the family.
Nice review, Karen! Thank you for the note about the sexual content.
I either have this one on my radar or else I own it but I know I want to read it…thank you for sharing her great review!!! I am going to try to talk my sister into doing reviews for me…rather with me!!!
I want to experiment more with reading outside of my comfort zone…hmm…should I start w/something like this?
Anyway, GREAT review. I love your sister’s guest posts!
xo
Excellent review! I don’t know that it’s my speed but I appreciate knowing more about it.
How fun that your sister is reviewing on your blog! Great to hear her thoughts.
Thanks for this review. Fantasy is a genre I enjoy — good to know that this one was a winner for your sister.
Thanks to Karen for her review! Kathy, this one’s out of my comfort zone, too … but I like Sandy’s approach to “try one bite”
Hey Karen!
Going to add this one to the list for my teen to read. Magical seems to be a winning statement, especially since it got both yours and the American Library Association Best Young Adult Book Winner 2010.
It sounds interesting! I discovered the first book while browsing on the Book Depository this week and was wondering if it was any good. I think I’ll give it a try!
My oldest loved Eragon series and this may be one he would enjoy!
Nice review Karen and thanks Kathy for hosting your sister on your blog. I enjoy the reviews!
