Saturday Snapshot

November 27, 2010

This picture is of my maternal grandfather and an unknown man.  My grandfather is the one standing with the sword.  He was in the Czar’s army and we think he was an aide to an officer, but we’re not sure.  If anyone can identify the uniform, please let me know!

Saturday Snapshot is hosted by Alyce of At Home With Books.  It’s easy to participate – just post a picture that was taken by you, a friend, or a family member and add your link on Alyce’s site.

Cool picture! I get the impression there were a gazillion different uniforms for every occasion even. There’s a forum in which people who know try to identify them from the pictures – did you try this place? http://forum.alexanderpalace.org/index.php?board=40.0

Awesome picture! I appreciate these old family pictures. We have several of both my husband’s family and my own and we’re framing them and dedicating a wall to them. I hope that you can find more information about the uniform and history. I wish that I had more of my mother’s family in Germany.

This is wonderful, I have many of those kinds of photos. With your permission I’d like to forward this on to my husbands aunt/cousin, they are really good with identification of uniforms, they live in Latvia. It might help. I think even my husbands grandfather had a similar one, but I can’t see all the bits and pieces like your picture shows.

What an amazing photo! I love old family photographs and have a huge stash given to me by my husband’s mom and his grandmother. Unfortunately, my own family tended just to throw out things like old snapshots, with the rest of the “junk”! I’m desperately trying to teach the younger generations to mend their ways.

Hope you eventually find more information about your grandfather and that wonderful uniform.

I just love these old pictures. Everyone looked so serious when they had a photo taken. My mom explained it was because they had to go to a studio and it was considered an important event for the grandparents. My how much has changed!

wow, such an interesting photo. I don’t think I have any pics of my grandfather from when he was young. Definitely a picture to cherish.

Wow! This is incredible! I’m no help on the uniform, though. I’ve got a lot of pictures of my grandfathers when they were young because they were both (“all” if you include my step dad’s daddy as a vice admiral!) Navy men and we have very similar pictures to the one you have. Very cool. :O)

  27. November 28, 2010 1:51 pm

Fantastic photo Kathy! These are the kinds of photos to treasure. I wish our family had some of the past generations. It’s always fascinating to imagine what their lives might have been like.

I love this photo, and was just talking to Frank about how different people look nowadays compared to how they looked back in the day. The men seemed more manly somehow, and the women were slightly more androgynous.
