Get Low

September 27, 2010

Get Low, billed as “a movie spun out of equal parts folk tale, fable and real-life legend”, is the story of  backwoods hermit, Felix Bush, in 1930′s Tennessee.  Years of isolation have created lots of tales about Felix, and when he comes into town one day, things only get worse.  He heads to a church and asks the preacher to perform a funeral for him while he’s still alive.  The preacher refuses, but Buddy Robinson, who works at the local funeral home, overhears and approaches his boss with the prospect of providing the service for Felix.

Since the business is struggling, Buddy’s boss, Frank Quinn, loves the idea.  Buddy and Frank work with Felix to make his dream of a funeral party come true.  It turns out that Felix has a secret that he wants to unburden himself of.  Along the way, Buddy and the rest of the community learn a lot about the mysterious man and themselves.

With a cast including Robert Duval, Sissy Spacek, Bill Murray and Lucas Black, I figured  Get Low had to be good, and I was right.  The story unfolded slowly, but it was done very well, so it kept my interest throughout.  I knew Felix had a secret but it took me a while to figure it out.  He blamed himself for something that had happened in the past and punished himself for it.  I couldn’t help but feel for him and both my friend and I cried at the end of the movie.   The all-star cast all turned in solid performances, but for me, Lucas Black, and his Alabama accent, stole the show.

The movie is rated PG-13 and while there’s no nudity or violence and very little language, the story is  not one younger children would understand.

This is new to me too, but I’m surely going to look for it. Loved the trailer, which is strange because I can’t stand Bill Murray but I do admire Robert Duval. Just read this over and I do believe I’ve developed a bit of a southern accent. :D

How have I not seen this? I really need to pull my head out of the 40s-60s when it comes to film… Thanks for the suggestion.

I’m shocked that I’ve not heard of this movie…hey I read EW each week and everything. Where have I been? That is a great cast too. I’m going to Netflix right now and get in line for it when it comes out on DVD, as I am quite sure I shall not be seeing any movies at the theater in the near future, unless it is fit for the kidlings.

I don’t remember hearing about this one but it sounds good and I love the trailer! I’m definitely going to watch this one even if I know it’s going to make me cry when the old man dies.

Sigh. I cannot possibly see it right now if it made you cry. I’m trying to get through the rest of this pregnancy happy and calm. Which is not going that well since my spiked bp has led to a bunch of crazy tests! I am only allowed to think and be happy for a bit :)

I almost went to see this last weekend, but chose The Town instead. I’ll definitely have to keep it on my list of movies to see!

I missed hearing about this one. It sounds excellent. I love all the actors in it and the story sounds just quirky enough to make it interesting. Thanks for tipping me off.

I had never even heard about this movie! I don’t seem to pay much attention anymore, there are not too many that catch my interest. But this one looks great! Thanks for posting!

My parents saw this and my mom said it was one of the best movies she has ever seen. Of course, with her it does help that there was no sex, no violence and very little swearing.

Noting this movie down. First time I hear of it but your review has me thinking that I should go out and see this one.

This sounds like a great movie. I’ve heard the name Lucas Black somewhere but can’t remember from what film.
