Wondrous Words Wednesday
Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where we share new (to us) words that we’ve encountered in our reading. If you want to play along, grab the button, and join the fun! (Don’t forget to leave a link in the comments if you’re participating.) All of my words this week came from my nifty Word-a-Day calendar.
1. edacious– “Jane is such an edacious reader that she makes at least three trips to the library every week.”
In this case, edacious means excessively eager: insatiable. I know several bloggers who are a lot like Jane!

2. hegira – “The hegira was one of hunger, thirst, pain, and betrayal that extended over a month and 200 miles.” —Curtis Hooper O’Sullivan, Air Power History, June 22, 2008
A hegira is a journey especially when undertaken to escape from a dangerous or undesirable situation: exodus.

3. exclave– “Technically, the state of Alaska is an exclave of the United States, bordering only Canadian territory.”
An exclave is a portion of a country separated from the main part and constituting an enclave in respect to the surrounding territory.

Edacious is now going to be my new word. Love it! I knew hegira but had never heard of exclave. Thanks for the post! Have a great week and read edaciously.
You are funny….love your enthusiasm…that word is growing on me too.
I will definitely be reading edaciously this evening.
I love those calendars – to me, the more obscure the words, the more fun they are, except that I rarely remember them by the next week!
They are great and you are correct…I forget by the following week….that is why I will have to use it within the next few hours so I don’t forget…LOL!!
I qualify as an edacious reader too. So glad to now have a fancy word to put on my addiction. ha.

Great words here too…love your website/blog…I don’t know how to make one of those…wish I did.
I actually knew the word “costermongers” from The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly. Who Hoo that I knew a big word.
Edacious is perfect…I think we’re all relating to that one!
Well you can bet I’ll be using the word edacious now. lol.
I really enjoy this meme and have missed it! Those are some major words, Kathy!
Edacious is great and so applicable, ‘specially ’round these parts! lol
Hegira reminds me of parts of many of the books I read and I think it applicable to the “journey” taken in “The Girl She Used To Be”!
All of my words this week are from the book I mention here. Hope you like them!
