The Threadbare Heart Mother’s Day contest winner

May 9, 2010

In honor of Mother’s Day and to celebrate the publication of The Threadbare Heart by Jennie Nash, several blogs participated in a Mother’s Day writing contest.  Participants were asked to write about their favorite fictional mother-daughter pair.   The winning entry from my blog was written by Clara and she said:

Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott. Perhaps an obvious choice, but it’s a novel that I’ve read several times at different periods in my life, and it resonates for me every time. Marmee, the mother in the novel, is adored by her daughters, and for good reason. She’s instilled good values in them, and she’s led by example.

For me, though, it’s the individuality of her girls that’s the greatest testament to Marmee’s skills as a mother. Jo is the most independent of the girls, and she draws most of the reader’s attention, but Alcott draws a fine individual portrait of each of the “little women.”

As we read, it’s clear that Marmee has raised her daughters to be true to their own natures. At the end of the day, that’s one of the greatest gifts that a mother can give a child.

For her efforts, Clara wins an autographed copy of The Threadbare Heart and will be entered in the Grand Prize drawing of a book club in a box – ten signed copies of The Threadbare Heart, a call-in by the author and a rum cake!  Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there and congratulations, Clara!

Congrats, Clara! I always wished my mom was just like Marmee when I was growing up. It must have been the never got mad part I was looking forward to because my mom certainly taught by example and encouraged each of us become our own people.

So glad to have won a copy of this book. It’s a great mother’s day gift — being a “mom” to two puppies counts, doesn’t it? ;-) –.

Now that I’ve read the recent biography of Louise May Alcott, I like her work on Little Women even more. She was a strong, independent, progressive, and disciplined woman, and I suspect that there was a lot of her in Jo, and vice versa.

    Congrats to Clara!

I love Little Women, too. My three sisters and I used to act out parts of it for my mother at Christmas time (I was Beth). When my daughters were in a musical theater production of Little Women recently, I was very pleased.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mamas! :-)
