Check out our new toy!

April 11, 2010

I’ve been admiring the photos on several blogs and couldn’t help but notice how much better they were than mine.  Seeing those great pictures made me want to get a new camera – a digital SLR, to be specific – because surely it had to be the camera and not my lack of skills that made their pictures so much better than mine.  After saving gift certificates for a while and consulting with Carl, I decided to take the plunge and buy the Nikon D5000.  This camera has all the bells and whistles and I don’t even know how to use half of them.  I figure the best way to learn is to experiment, so we headed out to Falls Park to take some pictures – here are a few of the shots we took.  (You can click on the photos to view them larger.)  I took the top and bottom pictures and Carl took the two in the middle.  We’re still learning, and we’re having fun while we’re at it.

  6. April 11, 2010 6:07 am

Looks good so far! I would love a digital SLR as well but I think it’s out of my budget for some time. I’ll look forward to seeing all your lovely pictures though. =)

Those are great shots. I am looking forward to seeing what you can do as you learn more. I love my camera but I think it’s time for me to upgrade too.

Love the new toy! I’ve been using my phone to take pictures and thank goodness its a phone because its not a very good camera, lol. Have fun learning about your camera, Kathy :)

That is an awesome new toy. My daughter has a fancy camera and her photos are always stunning. ENJOY

  10. April 11, 2010 7:46 am

Awesome toy! I think your pictures are beautiful. I admit that I haven’t really learned anything about mine. I just point and shoot! Probably a waste for me!

  11. April 11, 2010 7:51 am

    Beautiful!

  12. April 11, 2010 8:06 am

I have been saving my pennies for months – but still a few more pennies to go :)

What made you decide on the Nikon D5000? I keep vascilating between Canon and Nikon.

  13. April 11, 2010 8:54 am

Wonderful toy! I know how you feel. Last year when I bought my Canon toy, I was over the moon!

  14. April 11, 2010 9:04 am

Nice new toy! The pictures are awesome! I can’t wait to see what else you can do with all the bells and whistles! Have fun experimenting!

  15. April 11, 2010 9:22 am

Those photos look great! Have fun with your new camera.

  16. April 11, 2010 9:24 am

These are beautiful! Unfortunately with me, I’ve found that even a good camera doesn’t seem to help! :–) But it looks like that won’t be your problem!

  17. April 11, 2010 9:46 am

Very pretty pictures. I don’t have a fancy camera, but like the one I do have. It’s small and no bells and whistles to figure out. My problem is I take pictures, then forget to download them.

I need a new camera as well. Considering getting one like this. Like you, I figure the camera must be my problem. :)

The pics are gorgeous! I love the rocks! Sadly, there are no rocks in FL and it still amazes me how much I miss them. New England is just rocks with a little dirt over it. Well, it seemed that way anytime we had to do any yard/garden work.

Have fun experimenting. It’s the best way to learn.

  20. April 11, 2010 10:25 am

while I have a severe case of camera envy, I am not sure I will upgrade any tine soon. Any of the great digital cameras out there can have a high learning curve and I have still not reaches the limit of mine yet. but still…I love a new toy…lol

Does this mean you will be joining us for Wordless Wednesday now?

  21. April 11, 2010 10:42 am

Those are some great pictures! I love photography too and I just got a new SLR too, but mine is a Canon Rebel xsi, I actually want to get the camera you have eventually. I hope you enjoy it and take lots of great pictures!

  22. April 11, 2010 10:47 am

nice camera! i got a digital slr last summer for my birthday and love it! i’ve spent a ton of time looking at photography blogs and websites to help improve my skills. some of the photos i take now are actually pretty good. my favorite lens (and setting on the camera) is macro. i love close-up shots.

    good luck and enjoy it!

  23. April 11, 2010 10:58 am

    Very purty…enjoy your new toy!

  24. April 11, 2010 11:07 am

Those are beautiful photos, Kathy! And such a nice looking camera! Enjoy!

  25. April 11, 2010 11:43 am

Great toy (and wonderful pictures). My camera seems ridiculously old now (2004) and I am planning to replace it but, right now, all I use it for is pictures on my blog and I can’t rationalize the expense. Maybe as a Christmas present to myself!

  26. April 11, 2010 12:02 pm

I’m thinking I need a new camera too! Thanks for all your support during the readathon – you rock!

  27. April 11, 2010 12:04 pm

Have fun with it! I’ve got a D80 and it’s FUN stuff.

  28. April 11, 2010 12:32 pm

those are great pictures & i hope you have fun with your new camera! sweet! :-)

  30. April 11, 2010 2:13 pm

The photos are beautiful and I love your new camera!! I had a great 35 mm camera in college but that was a long time ago. I have a basic digital camera now that’s been so handy for years but I really need an upgrade. I’m drooling over yours! I wish I could get one that nice but I don’t think it’s in the budget. I still need to replace my laptop that was damaged beyond repair. Ouch. With three kids in the house those are luxuries not necessities.

I can’t wait to see all of the gorgeous photos you’ll be taking. Have fun! :)

  31. April 11, 2010 2:21 pm

I’m seriously green with envy!! :D
    Enjoy your new toy!

How fun! Those flower photos are just beautiful!

  38. April 11, 2010 6:48 pm

Lucky you! Thats a great camera. My husband had a D80, nice camera. Have fun with it!

  39. April 11, 2010 7:29 pm

I’m glad you’re enjoying your new camera. I’ve been very pleased with my D90, although I quickly learned that the operator is still an important part of the equation in DSLR land. ;)

Keep an eye out for upgrades. Swapping the kit lens for a dedicated macro lens made a world of difference for my typical camera work.

  40. April 11, 2010 9:00 pm

Enjoy your new toy. A camera is a great investment. I really should look into a new camera as well.

    The shots are beautiful.

  41. April 11, 2010 9:16 pm

There is nothing like a new toy. Well maybe a new book :)
Have fun learning the ins and outs of your camera. You guys look like you’re off to a good start.

  42. April 11, 2010 9:54 pm

Yay about the new camera! Love the pics; they are beautiful!

  43. April 11, 2010 11:08 pm

Wow! I didn’t realize what a difference a good quality camera can make! Makes me want to get my own now. Great photos, Kathy!

What a great new toy! You got some great shots.

  45. April 11, 2010 11:37 pm

How fun and you got some great shots. I’m still learning with my Nikon slr. I wish there was a class I could take!

  51. April 12, 2010 1:42 pm

Congrats on the new camera! A digital SLR is very high up on my wish list. I hope you have a lot of fun with it.

  52. April 12, 2010 3:14 pm

I love new toys like this. Both of you took great photos with it!

  53. April 12, 2010 3:25 pm

    Beautiful pictures! Enjoy the camera.

  54. April 12, 2010 4:22 pm

Congrats on your new toy. I need a new camera so will be interested to hear what you think of it after you have used it awhile.

  55. April 12, 2010 4:36 pm

Very nice camera! I would love to buy one of these when we are able. The camera I have now doesn’t take the best pictures…. I hope you enjoy it and get a lot of use out of it!

  56. April 12, 2010 5:31 pm

I have a Nikon and a Canon and I have to say, the Nikon seems to do better with scenery, the Canon does better with portraits. Just my opinion. I took a class to use my Nikon as it was a bit more complicated to use and even with the class I still overexpose shots every now and then. It’s fun practicing though.

  57. April 12, 2010 8:39 pm

My husband made a big pitch for a digital SLR a few years back and promised that his photos would be tons better … and he is right! Enjoy it … the more you play, the better photos you’ll get!

  58. April 13, 2010 6:56 am

You selected a gorgeous camera! I love the perspective on the last photo and the one before that. I hope you have fun experimenting. Are you using primarily automatic modes?

  59. April 13, 2010 8:28 am

Yay! That’s the best way to learn your camera — get out and play with it!! Looks like you’re having fun. :)

  60. April 13, 2010 1:28 pm

Lucky you! I’ve been thinking the same as you- I really need a better camera. The pictures are just great. Have fun with your new toy!

  61. April 13, 2010 8:01 pm

I love Nikon cameras-I have been shooting with them for over 25 years-I still have my first one. The magic lantern makes a good guide book. You are doing the right thing by just going out and shooting.

  67. April 19, 2010 1:24 pm

Glad to see you’re enjoying your new toy. I’m so behind the times, I don’t even own a digital camera. Serena’s my photographer when I need one. LOL

  68. April 25, 2010 6:04 am

I’m so excited about this post, Kathy! Congratulations on your new DSLR! I assure you this camera will be one of the best things you’ve gotten for yourself. I love mine. It’s not as advance as yours. It’s only a D40 and I’ve owned it for more than 2 years, but I love what it can do for me.

Love the pics you’ve taken! I want to see more! :D
