Review: One Hundred Butterflies
If there is a nature lover on your holiday shopping list, One Hundred Butterflies by Harold Feinstein would make a marvelous gift for them. This book is approximately 11 inches by 13 inches and contains one hundred color photographs of gorgeous butterflies. The photographs are large, so there’s usually just one on each page. They are printed on high quality paper and show each butterfly spread out on a black background, much like the cover. Even the endpapers of this book are beautiful. The butterflies and moths in these photos are just spectacular, but I was disappointed to see that none of the most beautiful ones are found in North America. Now I want to go to Central America and Asia to see some of my favorites in their natural habitats.
There is little text in this book, but there are some beautiful quotes and a little bit of information about butterflies interspersed between the photographs. I learned that we really don’t know what the butterfly’s antennae is for, except to “serve as ears.” A female butterfly usually lays 200 to 300 eggs – in nature only a few will live to fly, but at a butterfly farm, most of them will.
I really enjoyed looking through this book and I’m sure I will pick it up again and again to enjoy the beauty of these insects.

I love big books with big colorful pictures! We also love butterflies in our family. We have raised them and released them, and they are everywhere in our yard. This is a good idea for Christmas!
I too love big books with colorful pictures; I can spend hours looking through them. Great Christmas idea, along with the Angels book!

I love butterflies. When we climbed the Sun Pyramid in Mexico City, we were rewarded not only by the incredible view but also by dozens and dozens of large, swooping butterflies. Thank you for presenting this book. I know many butterfly lovers, myself included, who would greatly enjoy this book.

I am a butterfly nut, so this book looks very enticing to me. On a recent vacation, we got to go see a butterfly hatchery and got some great pictures, some of which I will frame and put up in the house. I am glad that you liked the book, and will definitely be putting it on my wish list. Thanks!
This sounds like a great gift for nature lovers and a good one for the coffee table.
