Wondrous Words Wednesday
Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where we share new (to us) words that we’ve encountered in our reading. Feel free to join in the fun. (Don’t forget to leave a link in your comment if you’re participating.)
My words from this week come from a list of new words being added to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. I was excited to see that vlog made the list, but it’s not one of my words, because I already knew it.
1. acai – a small dark purple fleshy berrylike fruit of a tall slender palm of tropical Central and South America that is often used in beverages
2. goji -the dark red mildly tart berry of a thorny chiefly Asian shrub that is typically dried and used in beverages
3. green-collar – of, relating to, or involving actions for protecting the natural environment
4. missalette – a shortened form of a missal published periodically for congregational use
5. shawarma – a sandwich especially of sliced lamb or chicken, vegetables, and often tahini wrapped in pita bread
What new words have you discovered lately?

Let’s see – from just reading the first 2 words, I could surmise that you’re reading a cocktail mixology book?
Happy Wednesday!
I’ve heard of missalette because I used to work for a church, but haven’t heard of the others. Interesting.

Can I have a shawarma, please?
That’s funny because I have a relative who got me acai last year and I got her goji berries! (so we have been practicing pronouncing them all that time!) And I just recently learned about shawarma from another blog – Bookpuddle – I guess that shawarma stands are all over the place in Canada!
Thanks for the fun list!
I love this celebration of new-to-us words and now you’ve found some new-to-the-dictionary words. Amazing.
I have a couple of new words this week here: Joyfully Retired
I remember a few years ago looking up acai because it was in my tea!
These are all new to me. I might could use “green-collar” now and again.
My words are here:

Hi Kathy,
I have a word this week, and one we could use every time we talk about the opening sentence of a book.
Here.
shawarma…. I could go for this…
LOL
Good morning Kathy!
Great idea – take your words right from the dictionary!
My words are here.
I’ve heard of acai, but have never tried it.

I’ve heard of acai, from a Facebook ad that ran for at least a month! Some kind of acai energy drink, I believe.
I had so much fun playing last week that I decided to play again:

Great new words, Kathy!
I was disheartened last year when “ginormous” was added. I had been after my kids not to say it, since it wasn’t a word. Now that it’s in the dictionary I have to let it pass!
I finally remembered to write some words down!

A shawarma sure sounds good. Thanks for the words.
Good list. I’ve never heard of the last two.
Mine’s up.

I did not know anything about the last two words. Good ones!
Wondrous Words Wednesday
I love Merriam-Webster’s new words, especially goji! Sometimes they put words in the dictionary that don’t really seem like they should be there such as “bootylicious”!
I love this meme! This is my first time participating!
The House of the Seven Tails

I would have thought green-collor meant something similar to white or blue collar. Nice picks
I wish I knew you were doing this! I always keep a pocket dictionary on my nightstand in case I come across a new word. Next time I pick it up, I’ll make a note of it and come back!
I love expanding my vocabulary!
Totally telling everybody today that I has too many shawarmas !! Look forward to all the WTF looks !! LMAO !!
I knew #1 and #4!! Getting smarter every Wednesday
Yeah apparently acai is very “now” in health circles. I know I love a fleshy, berrylike fruit to kick start my day.
And it looks like shawarma is meaty falafel. Now we know!

The only one I knew was acai. But I love these posts exactly because they’re so full of new to me words!
I knew acai and goji, but the others are new to me. I think shawarmas sound tasty!
I never heard of green-collar and missalette before.
I knew acai and goji from the smoothie place and shawarma from the sandwich place, so I actually learned these words from a menu
Just posted my words on my blog: http://bookatopia.blogspot.com/2009/08/wondrous-words-wednesday-august-5-2009.html. I have a word that I couldn’t find a definition of this week
I never heard of any of these words before, except for the one you didn’t include!
How funny that yours are from the dictionary … because I combined my Wondrous Words Wed post with a book review of “Reading the OED” by Ammon Shea, who spent a year reading the entire Oxford English Dictionary. I learned a couple of words this week ….

Where did u find Shawarma?
I love it.. YUMM! ~~ Indian style one of course!
‘Dewd’ should be a new word. I’m pushing for it. Right now it shows up on urbandictionary.com
And I can honestly proclaim that I’ve never heard of 4 of the 5 words.
‘Acai’ is familiar.
