Wondrous Words Wednesday
Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where we share new (to us) words that we’ve encountered in our reading. Feel free to join in the fun.
All of my words for this week come from Miranda’s Big Mistake by Jill Mansell. The first two are British terms that are unfamiliar to me.
1. punnets - “As Miranda crouched in front of the fridge, drooling at the sight of Parma ham, marinated mushrooms and punnets of strawberries, she could hear the sounds of shouts and splashing outside in the pool.”
A punnet is a small basket for fruits or vegetables.
2. cagoule – “Danny glanced sideways as a man in a turquoise cagoule shuffled past, clutching an envelope and heading for the post-box at the end of the road.”
Cagoule is the British term for a lightweight, weatherproof raincoat or anorak with a hood.
3. epiglottis – “Her orange-lipsticked mouth was wide open and her epiglottis quivered as she drew breath.”
An epiglottis is a thin plate of flexible cartilage in font of the glottis that folds back over and protects the glottis during swallowing. By the way, the glottis is the elongated space between the vocal cords.
4. pillion – Chloe tried for a moment to picture herself on it, eight and a half months pregnant and riding pillion.
The British definition of pillion is a motorcycle or bicycle saddle for a passenger.
What new words have you discovered lately?

Friday is my one year blogiversary and to celebrate, I’m giving away a $25 (US Dollars) gift card to the bookstore of the winner’s choice. This can be an online bookstore (like Amazon), a big chain (like Barnes & Noble, Borders, Books-a-Million, or Chapters) or an indie (like Powell’s) as long as I can order the gift card online. To enter, just let me know what bookstore you prefer in your comment. Contest is open world wide and ends on Friday, June 12, 2009 at noon, EST. I will use random.org to determine the winner.

Heh, I had never heard cagoule before and I’ve been with a British guy for years! He just calls it a raincoat. LOL.
