Wondrous Words Wednesday

vocabulary

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where we share new (to us) words that we’ve encountered in our reading.  Feel free to join in the fun.

My words for this week came from Mating Rituals of the North American WASP by Lauren Lipton.

1.  fecundity – “As if stepping between Bex and a stroller could shield her friend from the fecundity that mocked from every corner.”

Fecund means fruitful in offspring or vegetation; prolific.

2.  trochaic – “The word had perfect rhythm – perfectly trochaic on its own, but ideal for iambic pentameter: An all-too-fleeting aphrodisiac.”

Trochaic means of, relating to, or consisting of trochees.

I had to look trochees up after reading that definition and a trochee is a metrical foot consisting of one long syllable followed by one short syllable or of one stressed syllable followed by one unstressed syllable.

3.  dolor – “But when Peggy returned on the weekends, which were filled with more social invitations than he’d ever received without her – and left little time alone with her – Luke’s dolor deepened.”

Dolor is mental suffering or anguish; sorrow.

What new words have you discovered lately?

Dolor is a new word for me.

Trochaic I know very well because I write poetry. (BTW, did I tell you I have a poetry blog? Click on my name to go there!)

Based on your words, I can’t wait to go read the review. Now I’m curious.

Dolor was the only one of those I knew (and that’s just because I know some Spanish).

I had only one word this week.

I knew trochaic had something to do with meter, although I couldn’t have defined it. The other two words I knew.

Here are my words this week:

Great words. I don’t have any this week, again. I don’t think I’m paying enough attention, lately.

Excellent words! I knew fecundity and dolor, but trochaic was brand new.

    My words are here.

Dolor sounds like a word I would use. Thanks for sharing these today…I didn’t have any new ones this week.

I was so swamped today that I couldn’t even dream of thinking of a post about words. But I’m really enjoying everyone else’s today.

I saw “trochaic” and was sure I ought to know it. I did, once your definition reminded me, but I’d never have remembered on my own.

Sorry I haven’t been putting my words up lately! (I have a list!) But I have been overwhelmed by my reading. I hope to start this up again next week.

I’ve always thought fecund was a funny sounding word!
