Happy Birthday, Grammy!

My wonderful mother is 82 years old today (once the grandchildren came, we all just started calling  her Grammy).  My mother is not very assertive when it comes to herself, but if anyone messes with her kids or grandkids, they better watch out.  She was always the room mother, the Scout leader, etc.  I remember volunteering her to chaperone field trips (this was back when parents actually drove kids in their cars on field trips) because I thought she enjoyed it, and I knew she wouldn’t want to miss out.  She would stop with that carload of kids at Krispy Kreme and get each of us a doughnut and swear us to secrecy.  Oh, those were marvelous times!  She did without, so that my sister and I could have things.  Today, she is my 89 year old father’s primary care giver and she still has lots of energy.

I attribute my love of reading to my mother.  She always read and she encouraged us to read and use the library.  If anyone said they were bored, she’d reply with “read a book.”  I would sit at the kitchen table and read to her while she cooked dinner and she would always compliment my book selections.
